Who Knew???
Each year, National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day on April 30th raises awareness for thousands of pets that are waiting for (and needing) adoption from the shelters.
Animal shelters require year-round assistance and adoption is a part of the process. Since animals come in daily, the shelters must work quickly to ensure the animal’s health and well being. Only then can they be adopted into their forever home. The day also encourages you to visit a shelter near you and find your new fur baby. Visit with the shelter to consider all the needs the dog or cat requires for the long term.

The smallest possible size for anything in the known universe is the Planck Length, which is 1.6 x10-35 m across. It is the equivalent of a millionth of a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a centimeter (or a decimal point followed by 34 zeroes and a one). Under the laws of quantum physics, this would be the size of quantum foam, or the tiny wormholes that give space a foam-like structure. If this is beyond you, don't worry: You'd probably need a very advanced degree to fully understand that concept. Who knew?

Who Knew???
The Kentucky Derby is a tradition that takes place on the first Saturday in May.
Its long and storied history brings out a taste for mint juleps, colorful sun hats and a thrill for the race. The jockeys and horses will prepare for the day at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The first in the Triple Crown series, The Kentucky Derby will be followed The Preakness Stakes and The Belmont Stakes. While both The Preakness and The Belmont are the older races, The Derby has run continuously since its inception in 1875.

The first breakfast cereal had to be soaked overnight before it could be eaten. Today you can simply pour some cereal in a bowl and start eating it. But in order to consume the first manufactured breakfast cereal, which was created in 1863, you had to soak it in milk overnight just to make it edible. The cereal was made of graham flour that had been baked into brittle cakes, then crumbled up and baked again. Not surprisingly, "it was not an immediate success," according to The New York Times Magazine. Who knew?

On May 2nd, National Truffle Day serves up a deliciously sweet treat and places the chocolate truffle in the spotlight.
Traditionally, chocolatiers make this sweet confection with a chocolate ganache center coated in chocolate, icing, cocoa powder, chopped nuts, or coconut. They may fill the truffle with other yummy surprises. For example, some candy makers include cream, melted chocolate, caramel, nuts, fruit, nougat, fudge, toffee, mint, marshmallow, or liqueur.
N. Petruccelli of Chambery, France is believed to be the inventor of the chocolate truffle in December 1895. Truffles became much more prevalent in 1902 when the Prestat Chocolate Shop opened in London. Prestat still sells “Napoleon III” truffles made to the original recipe.

The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated the same year Nintendo was founded. Don't assume that Paris' Eiffel Tower is much older than Nintendo, a company famous for manufacturing popular video game systems. In reality, the iconic Parisian landmark was inaugurated the very same year that Nintendo was founded: 1889. While the tower was being formally introduced to the public at the World's Fair, a playing card company that would eventually become Nintendo was being launched in Kyoto by Fusajiro Yamauchi.
