Hippos have the largest mouths of any animal on land. Hippos might seem like jovial creatures, but you don't want to mess with them. According to Guinness World Records, the African animal can open its jaws almost a full 180 degrees — making for an average gape of about four feet. They can kill a crocodile, lion, or anything short of an elephant or rhino that attacks them. Their teeth have sharp canines and incisors up to one foot long used for defending themselves and for eating. Who knew?

Simone Biles is the most decorated U.S. gymnast in history. Simone has combined total of 30 Olympic and World Championship medals. She went undefeated in world championship and Olympic all-around competitions from 2013-2016 and, in Rio, set a U.S. record for most gold medals won in women’s gymnastics at a single Games. Biles was the overwhelming gold-medal favorite in almost every event in Rio, and she didn’t disappoint: she won bronze on the balance beam and gold in the individual all-around and team competition, as well as on vault and floor. Go Simone!

Who Knew??? On June 9th of each year, National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day recognizes a delicious and seasonal pie. A tart vegetable, rhubarb is often paired with sweet fruits making for a pleasing dessert.
Around the country, rhubarb is a perennial favorite for home gardens. One of the first fruits of their labors, gardeners begin to harvest rhubarb in the middle of May and early June, and it finds its way into desserts and preserves. Since it takes on the flavor of the fruit or vegetable it is paired with, it is an excellent complement to many recipes.

Grab your ballpoint pen and write this on your calendar. June 10th of each year, National Ballpoint Pen Day recognizes the useful writing utensil and commemorates the anniversary of the patent filing on June 10, 1943.
Before 1943, anyone who wanted to write a letter or scribble some notes on a piece of paper used a fountain pen or pencil. Now the dominant writing instrument, the ballpoint pen was originally conceived and developed as a cleaner and more reliable alternative to the quill and fountain pens. In earlier years, many attempts by inventors led to failed patents as their inventions did not deliver the ink evenly. They also had overflow and clogging issues. However, in June of 1943, the brothers Laszlo and Gyorgy Biro obtained their patent for the ballpoint pen, revolutionizing how many write letters and conduct business.

How big was it? Oh, just a mere 223 pounds. Who knew?
