The US Ohio class submarine is the world's doomsday device. The SSBN (Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear powered) is the most powerful weapons system ever built. It can carry 24 Trident II D5 (aka UGM-133A) ballistic missiles, 44' long with three stages and a range of 7,500+ (classified) miles, each missile with up to 12 W88 MIRV (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle) thermonuclear warheads, with a yield of 475 kilotons each. That makes 192 warheads, for a total yield of 91.2 megatons, enough to obliterate many cities thousands of miles away. On average each Trident II D5 is limited to 8 warheads under the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty. Since 2020 submarines carry 70% of the US nuclear strageic arsenal.
These subs are 560 feet long and 42 ft wide w/an operating depth greater than 1,000 feet (classified) and can remained submerged until their store of food (6 months+/-; the exact duration is classified) is exhausted. They have a lifetime of at least 42 years: two 20 year operating cycles separated by a two year refueling overhaul. A full salvo from one Ohio class submarine — which can be launched in less than one minute — can unleash up to 192 nuclear warheads (formerly 288 MIRV) to wipe out an entire continent, or mankind. 100 nuclear warheads detonated at once would extinguish all animal and plant life. From a high of 70,300 nuclear weapons world-wide in 1986, as of 2021 there are approximately 3,750 active nuclear warheads and 13,890 total nuclear warheads in the world, a total of 17,500. Many of the decommissioned weapons are simply stored or partially dismantled, not destroyed. Only South Africa has disarmed all of its nuclear weapons.
US military refers to the Ohio class sub as "defenders of freedom" and the Trident II D5 missiles as "Peacekeepers." Trident II missiles are carried by 14 US Ohio and four British Vanguard class submarines, with 24 missiles on each Ohio class and 16 missiles on each Vanguard class (the number of missiles on Ohio class submarines will be reduced to 20 each starting in 2023). 4 of the 18 subs in service are converted into the SSGN. G denotes guided missiles. The US Ohio class submarine has 4 torpedo tubes with Mk48 Torpedoes, 154 Tomahawk Cruise Missiles, with up to 12 MIRVed W76, W80, or W88 (475 kt) nuclear warheads each. Accuracy is within 295 ft. 24 Ohio class subs were planned. The 1994 Nuclear Posture Review determined the United States needs only 14 of its 18 SSBNs to meet the nation’s strategic force needs.
The Columbia class replacement sub began official construction on May 23, 2019, and is scheduled to enter service in 2031. USS Columbia (SSBN-826), the first ever ship named for the District of Columbia, will cost 6.2 billion dollars. The remaining are to cost 4.9 billion dollars each (in 2021 dollars). USS Wisconsin (SSBN-827) is ordered. 12 are planned with a total of 1,920 MIRV nuclear warheads. Who knew?

National Hug Your Cat Day – June 4, 2021 Ancient Egyptians worshipped, revered, and spoiled their cats (sound familiar?). They were seen as symbols of grace and poise — traits cats are still associated with today. There’s a lot of cat hugging going on all the time, but make an extra special attempt during National Hug Your Cat Day on June 4. The best way to celebrate? Scoop your regal cat right off the ground and snuggle the heck out of it until it feels the love. Sounds like a pleasant activity we can all get behind, no? So grab your kitty BFF and celebrate with us!

June 5 - National Gingerbread Day Most people are familiar with gingerbread house, that is a typical Christmas dish. But gingerbread can come in number of different shapes and forms. June 5 is National Gingerbread Day, that is celebrated by people across the country.
Gingerbread has been known for ages. It is believed, that the first recipe of gingerbread was brought to Europe in 992 by Armenian monk. He lived there for 7 years until his death and taught French priests cooking gingerbread. Gingerbread became popular across Europe, but spices were always expensive, that is why not everyone could afford this simple dessert at that time. Gingerbread biscuits were sold in the 17th-century Europe in monasteries, pharmacies and even town square farmers markets. But it became widely available only in the 18th century.
Gingerbread cookies can be baked at any time of the year, that is why you can enjoy them even in June. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to make your dessert even better. Happy National Gingerbread Day!

Who Knew??? National Gardening Exercise Day – June 6, 2021 On National Gardening Exercise Day, June 6, we appreciate the bodybuilding activity that is gardening by picking up our trowels and toiling in our gardens! Not only is it so satisfying to grow your own flowers or herbs from seedling to sprout to a full-grown plant, but it’s also great exercise! Any gardener will tell you that squatting to pick weeds or water a seedling will get those quads burning. Besides, working in the hot sun adds an extra athletic challenge.

A chameleon's tongue is twice as long as its body. According to National Geographic, the sticky tongues of chameleons are roughly twice the length of their bodies. If they were humans, that would be like having a tongue that measured 11 to 12 feet long. In addition, the color-changing lizard has one of the fastest tongues in the animal kingdom. Who knew?
