The original flag of the USA (the Grand Union flag), was first displayed by George Washington on Jan. 1, 1776. It showed the British Union Flag of 1606 before Betsy Ross designed the Stars and Stripes that was displayed for the first time in May, 1776. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed The Flag Resolution which stated: “It is resolved that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternated red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” The 15 Star and 15 Stripe flag known as the “Star Spangled Banner flag” became the Official United States Flag on May 1st, 1795. Two stars were added for the admission of Vermont (the 14th State on March 4th, 1791) and Kentucky (the 15th State on June 1st, 1792, and was to last for 23 years before the flag returned to 13 stripes.
