Who Knew???
National Cherry Tart Day is a tart dispute. While usually observed on June 17th, it is also suggested that June 18th and 21st are also the days for this unofficial food holiday. To be on the safe side, make three.
Now, if you are looking for a cherry pie, we’ve blown the top off that day. Or rather, it’s been left off entirely. A tart has a shallow crust, and the filling can be sweet or savory. On June 17th (18th or 21st), the choice is a sweet and lip-smacking cherry filling!

England is hit with more tornadoes per square mile than any other country in the world. America definitely experiences its fair share of dangerously blustery weather, but England is considered to be the tornado capital of the world. The country, on average, gets hit with 34 tornadoes each year, which is about 2.2 every 3,861 square miles. The U.S., on the other hand, experiences about 1.2 every 2,970 square miles. Who knew?

Who Knew???
Each year on the third Friday in June, National Flip Flop Day encourages us to wear our favorite flip flops and show them off!
Thong style sandals are by no means new to footwear. They’ve been around for thousands of years. However, the term “flip flop” has applied to flat-soled sandals with straps between the first and second toes and across the top of the foot since the 1960s. The term also describes someone who changes their mind or an electronic component.
This day strictly recognizes the footwear that makes a flip-flopping sound as we walk, slapping the back of our feet as we head to the beach or make way for the pool. They come in all shades and colors, beaded, bejeweled, and bedazzled. Some are made of leather and cork.

The word "kimono" means "a thing to wear." If you translate the garment's name from its Japanese roots — ki means "wear" and mono means "thing" — the word literally means "a thing to wear." Who knew?

Who Knew???
Each year on June 19th, National Garfield the Cat Day celebrates the fictional cartoon character, Garfield. Jim Davis created the comic strip Garfield and the title’s protagonist, a tabby cat by the same name. The observance celebrates Garfield and the entertainment he brings us.
Garfield launched on June 19, 1978. The strip chronicled the life of the lead character, the cat Garfield (named after Jim Davis ’s grandfather). It also introduced Garfield’s owner, Jon Arbuckle and Jon’s dog, Odie. The publication became syndicated in 2013 in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals and holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip.

The world's oldest operating library is in Morocco. Dating back to 859 A.D., the Al-Qarawiyyin Library in Fez, Morocco, had long been off limits to visitors who weren't the select few researchers and academics that had been granted access. However, in 2016, the world's oldest library, which houses a 9th century version of the Quran, finally opened its doors to anyone wishing to explore its ancient texts. Who knew?

June 19, 1913 South Africa implements the Natives Land Act. The law limited the areas of land that could be owned by black people to “native reserve” areas, which comprised less than 10 percent of the country's total area. It was in force until Apartheid was dismantled in the 1990s. Since this is racism in many states teachers will not be able to talk about this.

Who Knew??? The June solstice occurs on Sunday, June 20, 2021, at 11:32 P.M. EDT. In 2021, it so happens that the solstice falls on the same day as Father’s Day! The solstice marks the official beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, occurring when Earth arrives at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt (about 23.5 degrees) toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year. (By longest “day,” we mean the longest period of sunlight hours.) On the day of the June solstice, the Northern Hemisphere receives sunlight at the most direct angle of the year.
