Who Knew??? Each year on the fourth Thursday in November recognizes the National Day of Mourning. The observance is an opportunity to reflect on Native American heritage and the role Thanksgiving played in the lives of their ancestors.
The organizers of this observance consider Thanksgiving Day as a continued reminder of the democide and suffering of Native American people. Since 1970, participants in the National Day of Mourning have honored Native ancestors and their struggles to survive today. Part of the mission behind the event is to educate Americans about the history of Thanksgiving.
Organized by United American Indians of New England (UAINE) during a period of Native American activism, the march has brought about revisions in the depiction of United States history and government and settler relationships with Native American peoples as well as a renewed appreciation for their culture.

Early Horses Had 14 Toes Total, While Modern Horses Only Have Four. Equine is the term for animals who have a single toe on each foot, such as zebras, donkeys, and horses. But these are modern creatures. Their ancient ancestors that lived around 55 million years ago were not only smaller (more dog-like in size), but they also had 14 toes — four toes on their front feet and three on their back. Who knew?

There Has Been One Documented Albino Penguin Chick. Penguins are undeniably quirky creatures and baby penguins are absolutely adorable. But the baby albino penguin born at a Polish zoo in December 2018 is almost too cute to believe. And while its white feathers might look cool, Vikki McCloskey, curator of the California Academy of Science Steinhart Aquarium, explained to IFL Science that it will likely affect how other penguins view him. "Juvenile penguins don't have their tuxedos until they go through their first adult molt," she said. "If this bird never gets a tuxedo then I imagine the other birds would consider it a juvenile no matter how old it is." Who knew?

Who Knew??? Each year on November 27th, National Bavarian Cream Pie Day recognizes a pie that makes a grand entrance. This rich and delectable dessert is possible, thanks to the French chef, Marie-Antione Carême.
In the early 19th century, Carême established many of the French cooking techniques still used today. He’s even given credit for abolishing some practices from his kitchens. One dessert Carême receives credit for includes the creation of Bavarian cream. Perhaps he didn’t create it but perfected this gelatin-based pastry cream. Initially, gourmet restaurants and luxury hotels served Bavarian cream pie in France in the early 19th century.
