Who Knew???
On March 8th, National Oregon Day recognizes the Beaver State. Valentine’s Day 1859, Oregon became the 33rd state to join the Union. Oregon’s climate enjoys the warm Pacific air west of the Cascade Mountains and in the lush Willamette Valley. More extreme temperature ranges are experienced in Oregon’s high desert.

Rice is the Oldest Food that We Still Eat Today. Humans have been cultivating rice plants — which are actually species of grass — based on archaeological and linguistic evidence, is that Oryza sativa rice was first domesticated in the Yangtze River basin in China 13,500 years ago. All of our modern, domesticated rice can be traced back to a single crop in the Pearl River Valley of ancient China. The only other food that might be as old is corn, which was domesticated in Mexico about 12,000 years ago. Who knew?

March 9, 1841, the U.S. Supreme Court, in United States v. The Amistad, ruled 7-1 in favor of a group of illegally enslaved Africans who were captured off the U.S. coast after seizing control of a Spanish schooner, La Amistad; the justices ruled that the Africans should be set free.

Who Knew???
Each year on the 9th of March, people across the country observe National Get Over It Day. Just as it implies, the day is to do exactly that, GET OVER IT. “It” may be a variety of things. Sometimes we need to get over the small things like spilled milk or traffic. Even news such as being passed over for a promotion, poor grades, or an argument with a family member shouldn’t cause us to live our lives in a state of misery forever.

Pen Caps Have Holes to Prevent Choking. Next time you're looking at a cheap, mass-produced ballpoint pen — the Bic Cristal, in particular, with its clear barrel and cap the color of the ink inside — take a closer look at the top of the cap. There's a hole. While some conspiracy theorists thought Bic did this on purpose to dry out the ink so you'd have to buy more pens, the truth is much more thoughtful. In case a small child should happen to swallow the small, brightly-colored cap, the hole ensures that the cap doesn't block off the airway completely, preventing choking. Who knew?

March 10, 2020, clusters of the coronavirus swelled on both U.S. coasts, with more than 70 cases linked to a biotech conference in Boston and infections turning up at 10 nursing homes in the Seattle area. Members of a choir in Washington state gathered for a rehearsal that was later found to have been a superspreader event; disease trackers said a choir member with coronavirus symptoms attended, and 52 of the 60 others who were there got sick with confirmed or probable COVID-19, including two who died. (Experts said the public health investigation that followed was key in concluding that the virus was spreading through the air.)

What better way to start March 10th than with National Blueberry Popover Day? Popovers are airy rolls that puff up when baked, popping over the edge of the tin. They are light and crispy on the outside while the insides are warm and often hollow. They can be filled with custards, creams, and fruits for a sweet treat, especially blueberries.

Dog's Aren't Actually Colorblind. Though you may have heard the myth that dogs don't see colors, the truth is that they do, but in a more limited spectrum than humans. They can see yellows, blues, and violets very well, but have a harder time distinguishing reds, oranges, and greens. However, decreased vision of color allows dogs to have more of the receptors that let them see well in low light and track movement. If you're thinking of redecorating your dog house, stick to blue and purple. Who knew?

Who knew? 1st fined speeder was driving 4 times the speed limit!!
According to Guinness World Records, the first person to be charged with speeding was Walter Arnold of the English village of Paddock Wood, Kent. On Jan. 28, 1896, Arnold was spotted going four times the speed limit in his 19th-century Benz. The speed limit at the time was just two miles per hour. The constable had to chase him down on his bicycle, issuing a ticket for £4 7s.Bertha Benz & sons buying petrol at chemist's shop (1888). ~~~~~~Benz delivery vehicle (1896).~~~~~~~~~~~Constable on a chase.~~~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
