March 29, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln ordered plans for a relief expedition to sail to South Carolina’s Fort Sumter, which was still in the hands of Union forces despite repeated demands by the Confederacy that it be turned over.

Who Knew???
On March 29th, National Nevada Day celebrates The Battle Born State and the 36th state to join the Union. On October 31, 1864, Nevada joined West Virginia as the only other state to be granted statehood during the Civil War. The mostly desert landscape is nearly devoid of trees. With vast open spaces, dramatic gorges, majestic mountains, and windswept rock formations, the state transforms quickly.

The Computer Mouse Was Originally a Turtle. It's not hard to imagine how the computer mouse got its name — it's small and quick, and the cord that connects it to the computer resembles a tail. However, manufacturers of early versions referred to it as a turtle, with its hard shell on top and moving parts underneath. Although early computer experts weren't sure they'd catch on, computer mice (or mouses — the Oxford English Dictionary accepts both plurals) are here to stay. Who knew?

Who knew? Jet engines aren't started by the pilot.
I was yesterday-years-old when I learned that an air-pressure cart has to roll to the plane and blow REAL, REAL HARD on the jet engines to start them or nobody goes anywhere. And nothing controlled by the engines can start either. You can sit closed in for hours if the airport has to try 3 different "air carts' to find one strong enough to blow REAL, REAL HARD on the engines for the big plane you are on. Yep, I know now.
"Air start unit (ASU), or the so-called "start cart", is a wheeled airport utility that can be carted over to an aircraft. It provides high pressure air to the engine to start it. This helps save the battery from wear due to repeated use. Start carts are at every major airport." Denver had a hard time finding the right one for one pilot yesterday. Who knew??? Not all of them. There are APUs. Most civil and military aircraft requiring self-contained starting systems these units are known by various names including Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), Jet Fuel Starter (JFS), Air Start Unit (ASU) or Gas Turbine Compressor (GTC). Comprising a small gas turbine which is electrically started, these devices provide compressed bleed air for engine starting and often also provide electrical and hydraulic power for ground operations without the need to run the main engines. ( I work for a major engine manufacturer )

Who Knew???Manatee Appreciation Day on the Last Wednesday in March focuses the world’s attention on an herbivore with no known natural enemy. Also known as the sea cow, manatees are a vulnerable species due to their contact with humans. Boating and pollution, as well as other external forces, threaten the manatee.
These slow-moving herbivores inhabit slow rivers, canals, saltwater bays, estuaries, and coastal areas around the world. All three species of manatees are considered gentle giants, spending most of their time eating, sleeping, and traveling.

A Slinky Has Been to Space. A popular toy ever since its invention in 1946, the humble Slinky has delighted girls and boys of all ages for more than 70 years. Made of flattened wire (originally) or plastic (for safety reasons), an uncoiled Slinky would be 87 feet long. It's not only a toy; the metal version has been used by engineers and soldiers as a makeshift antenna. In 1985, a Slinky even made it into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. However, astronaut Dr. Seddon reported that the Slinky refused to slink in zero gravity: "it sort of droops." Who knew?

Who Knew??? National Bunsen Burner Day on March 31st each year honors the birthday of German chemist Robert Wilhelm Eberhard von Bunsen. Named after Robert Bunsen, a Bunsen burner is standard laboratory equipment that produces a single open gas flame. Labs use the Bunsen burner for heating, sterilization, and combustion. The gas can be either natural gas (usually methane) or a liquefied petroleum gas, such as propane, butane, or a mixture.
