Who Knew??? On April 19th, National North Dakota Day recognizes the Peace Garden State. Long before Lewis and Clark traveled up the Missouri River, the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara arrived in North Dakota. During the Corps of Discovery, the team camped at Fort Mandan along the Missouri River for the winter. Here, their translators, Sacagawea and Charbonneau, joined the expedition. Sacagawea would also give birth to her son, Jean Baptiste.

A Woman Convicted of the Death Penalty by hanging was Released When She Survived. Edinburgh local woman Margaret Dickinson was hung in 1736 for killing her baby after it was born. After her body was tossed onto a cart to be taken away, she awoke and, since Scots Law prohibited punishment being meted out twice, she was free to go. There is now a pub in the Grassmarket (a historic market place and an event space in the Old Town of Edinburgh, Scotland) named Maggie Dickson's near where she was 'hanged'. Who knew?

The Current U.S. Flag Was Designed by a 17-Year-Old. That would be Robert G. Heft, who created the design in 1958 as part of a school project when he anticipated Alaska and Hawaii joining the United States. After getting a B- for the assignment—"[At the time my teacher asked,] 'Why you got so many stars? You don't even know how many states we have,'" he told NPR — he wrote the White House 21 times until eventually President Eisenhower gave him a phone call and told him that his design would be made official. Who knew?

Happy Earth Day! The oldest USA fast food burger chain is White Castle. The first White Castle was opened in Wichita, Kansas in 1921 by Walt A. Anderson and Billy Ingram, making it the very first fast food burger chain in the United States. At the time, Americans were still hesitant to eat ground beef because of the horrible sanitation standards exposed by Upton Sinclair in his 1906 novel “The Jungle.” Because of this, White Castle’s founders insisted the interior of their restaurants be small, completely covered in stainless steel, and staffed by workers wearing impeccably spotless uniforms. Who knew?P.S. For the record, the first McDonald’s wouldn’t open until a full 19 years later.
