Will have a slice, please.Women Once Marched for the Right to Smoke. While we're familiar with Suffragettes and women's fight for the right to vote, less known is women's fight for the right to smoke. The same organization that fought for the ban on alcohol pushed to ban women smoking in public. In 1929, a group of women took to the streets, smoking cigarettes and carrying signs stating that cigarettes were "torches of liberty. Who knew?

Who Knew???On March 14th, National Underground America Day recognizes the approximately 6,000 people who live in some form of underground architecture across North America. The observance also celebrates the lifestyle, architecture, and benefits of underground living. Subterranean living boasts energy conservation as one of its top advantages. Completely covered homes or earth-sheltered homes are covered on all sides with soil while earth-bermed homes leave one side exposed. Both allow for more stable temperatures within the home and less exposure to the elements.

Forks used to be seen as Sacrilege when first introduced. In 11th century Tuscany, Italy forks alarmed religious leaders who said that using artificial hands was an offense to God. It was not until the 18th century that forks became accepted at the dining table. More and more families, even from the poorer classes owned forks. Who knew?

A Woman Was Elected to Congress Before Women Could Vote. Jeannette Rankin became the first female member of the U.S. Congress in 1916 — four years before women could vote. She served twice, from 1917 to 1919, and then decades later, from 1941 to 1943. She was in the minority who voted against entering World War I. Even though Rankin wasn’t the only vote against World War I, she drew the most ire, perhaps because she was a woman. And she was the lone vote against entering World War II. In the late 1960s, with a new wave of feminists and war protestors, Rankin rose to prominence again. She was again an influential voice in the anti-war movement and organized some of the largest protests against the Vietnam War. Her staunch pacifism proved controversial during both terms. She felt that, “You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake.” Who knew?

On May 17th, National Idaho Day recognizes the 43rd state to join the United States union on July 3, 1890. Known by locals as The Gem State, Idaho was settled as miners, traders, and missionaries made their way West into the territory of the Nez Perce, Shoshone, and Bannock peoples.
The state is dominated by the Rocky Mountains range. Snake River winds its way through the rugged western border of the state carving the deepest river gorge in North America. Hells Canyon National Recreation Area provides spectacular views of the dramatic landscapes the Snake River took thousands of years to sculpt.

The Bloody Mary Was Originally Known as "Bucket of Blood". Not the most appetizing name, but the familiar vodka-and-tomato-juice beverage originally carried that title when it was introduced at Harry's New York Bar. A patron named Roy Barton coined the name and it stuck…until New York City's King Cole Bar, at the St. Regis Hotel, reintroduced the drink and rebranded it first "Red Snapper," then, finally, "Bloody Mary."
