Any other nonconformists here?
How well do things work in your state?
Do you follow a curriculum or completely unschool?

Have graduated 3 kids, all from K-12. 21st or 22th year, methinks... My wife needs a cookbook for everything, so yes, there is a curriculum/curriculum provider, and therefore support.
What is with the term "unschool"?
[ Unschooling can mean different things for different people. Generally it referrs to actively choosing not to recreate a government-school environment and schedule/structure in the home. More often than not, these familes do not use a curriculum but focus on the interests of the student to discover and learn things together as a function of the everyday activities of the family.

Unfortunately I think this "homeschooling" deal is very political as well.
Most of the time it's CC's trying to prevent their kids from being taught evolution and biology/sex from either the system or from other children. They're completely worried their kids might be taught these things and end up rebelling against them and their religion, so they teach themselves to keep them "clean".
No other reason that i can tell.

Two of my part time employees are currently homeschooling their daughters.
Everything in New York State tends to be complicated and/or expensive.
They claim they're doing it due to the low quality of the local school system, bullying, sexual harassment, scheduling, transportation and daycare issues.
They're currently having communication issues regarding their Individualized Home Instruction Plan.
Whoever is in charge of approving the text books and/or online service course materials they plan to use is extremely slow to respond.
The other day they finally received a response to e-mails they sent over 2 weeks ago. Their deadline for submission/approval is fast approaching.
