In the next few days I'll be experimenting with various hosting sites (between bouts of goofing off while house sitting). Being as we have unlimited editing here—for registered authors—the following steps could be taken: - Initially attach a photo to a post to get an immediate publishing result
- Later upload the photo to a hosting site
- Edit the post to replace the attachment with a call to the hosting site
- Delete the attachment
or, if only a transient publishing of a photo is desired, the author simply waits for the photo to age out. If the latter, the author must realize that, if he does nothing, later readers will have the experience of posts that are in essence incomplete. I believe that simply assuming that old posts will not be encountered*, but will be skipped over due to lack of interest, is not realistic. Perhaps some kind of canned caveat can be included in such posts to let the reader know that the author is not quite the uncaring goofy dufas that the failure of the photo to appear implies. Or maybe not.... To summarize, the use of the attachment could be more regularized by developing a well-distributed procedure, rather than just assuming that all authors will figure things out in the best way for readers. Thoughts?
*If that is the case, one could make the case that instead of simply ageing out photos, the entire post could/should be aged out. If one looks at it that way, further thinking about the situation may be warranted.

Personally, I'd delete anything taking up allotted storage after a 24 hour period as in reality who really gives a rip in going back and reviewing the vast majority so silly posts anyway...unless you've nothing to do but kill time and this place seems a likely squat... Here's the problem with saying "who really gives a rip..." This site, GBO Forum, was created by CampKohler in part because Gas Buddy said it was removing the photo albums (along with the whiteboards and discussion forums), and people, if you read the Gas Buddy discussion forums, were irate about Gas Buddy's actions. You may think the "vast majority so silly...anyway", but apparently a lot of others didn't think they're so silly or else they wouldn't have complained said, yelled actually, they would quit Gas Buddy because the photo albums, white boards, and discussion forums were being removed. Maybe the question should be, would anyone like to help CampKohler by offering to pay for access to this site, the GBO Forum, in order to have greater storage and, essentially, everything they want him (or previously Gas Buddy) to make available for themselves. The other thing CampKohler could do is either limit the avatars, or maybe eliminate all the automatic message inclusions that people attach to each and every post they make (especially unnecessary in the one or two word "game" threads. This forum doesn't have to be, unless CampKohler wants it to be, everything for everyone.

There is a way for the admins to auto-prune posts indiscriminately right? The "old site" only kept like 200 posts. I would say to prune them after 30 days. Most of the threads that I post to would be past history at that time.
At That Other Site, you could make more posts appear by selectively ignoring users. Don't know how far back they went.

Oh, no! Someone chose the name of "gbo?" That makes things clear as mud! How do we distinguish between the forum and His Royal Highness? Dang it, I should have put that on the list of unavailable names. I still might delete the account and do that unless someone comes up with a bright idea in a hurry that will prevent confusion. I keep forgetting that people like to do that kind of wise-ass stuff. OK, you've had your fun. The CA DMV will kill your custom plate if they find out later that they don't like it for any reason, so why not here?
----
Don't worry about avatars and the other stuff, which is stored separately. It's real simple: attachment space is space occupied by attachments.

Interesting, didn't realize you could make more posts appear if you blocked users. I did know that apparently they at least kept "ever posted" so every thread you posted to - it keeps track of that for sure.

Before I use a photo here, I copy it to my computer. Click on: Microsoft Office Picture Manager. (Your pic now shows) Click on: Picture - top of screen Click on: Resize - in dropdown - Then on the right it shows the original size of your pic (EX: 1024 X 768) pixels - See % of original width and height box (EX: Change to 40% - new size 410 x 307) pixels - SAVE. - DONE. *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^^*^*^* > A: The number of pixels in one megabyte depends on the color mode of the picture. For an 8-bit (256 color) picture, there are 1048576, or 1048576 or 1024 X 1024 pixels in one megabyte. > B: There are 1024 KB's in ONE MB

I understand if all posts can't last forever, but 30 days is way too short for discussion/chat posts IMO. For some game ones maybe it doesn't matter. But can you differentiate?
Also, I hope it will remain free or chipping in would be voluntary. Not because we don't value the site, but some people's life circumstances just wouldn't allow for it. I know some senior citizens on low fixed incomes, for example. Or if it's a choice, and a person could pay if they want to publish attachments or something like that.
It sounds like some people assume that everybody checks in here every day. But that's not the case. You know, life happens. So 24 hours is not long enough.
Thanks for all you're doing, CK.
(l love that we can keep coming back to a post to edit it!)

Not sure if that was meant as a switch-a-roo importance but I'd say pictures that one generated themselves that have few or no other copies floating around have value stored here versus others that have copies everywhere - don't need to keep yet another copy around. Yes, I agree totally with that. Most of the photos posted here I can gladly do without. Or look at once and move on. But there are some that I value and like to go back to look at again, or might decide at a later date to mention in a forum and then need to go back to it get the link. My avatar is an example of that. If you look at the fine print it says something like (I can't see it at the moment) photo by stlhawk, used with permission. I saw that photo in one of the photography forums here and clicked on it to see the enlarged version. It was stunning, with much more detail than is visible in the avatar version. After thinking about it I decided to ask stlhawk if I could use it for my avatar and s/he said "yes". It took some time to become friends and message, etc. Then after a while I decided to post a link to it in a forum. I'd still like to go back to look at the enlarged version again, if I can find it. And maybe post the link again. In full disclosure, I am (or was?) a photographer, but I am not talking for my own photos. I've not yet edited any of mine to post on the internet and don't want to put them online until I can watermark them. But I enjoy looking at other photographs (as opposed to just snapshots, people's cat pictures, etc). I was trying to figure out how to say this without sounding too snobbish, when I read picturefreak's comment. That sounds like a good "criteria", although probably not a manageable one. I think that might be more like you (CK) were saying, too. That some photos are more relevant than others. And that relevancy might be that it's taken by a serious (even if amateur) photographer or that it helps communicate the message. But at the moment I can't think of how to make that into workable criteria. So this post is probably not very helpful in the end. Sorry. Oh, and I don't think everyone knows what is meant by external hosting vs being attached, etc. I kind of do, but just barely. I've visited photobucket or flickr a few times, but just to look and have never used them. I don't even remember which one it was. And for the technically illiterate, that's a distinction that doesn't make sense. Or maybe just to me b/c I feel like I'm almost technically illiterate. Just my four cents worth.

Just some clarification...we're just talking about attachments, those who attach pictures to their post, like a picture of Uneeda Biscuits in an A-to-Z Foods thread, correct? Does a link count towards attachment size? Or a video link?
I think I know the answer but just wanted to make sure.

(l love that we can keep coming back to a post to edit it!) And if you figure out the “bbcode” view you can quote one of your posts, edit it, and make it as a new message.

With the allotted space filling up, I have stopped posting photos in my answers except for a few boards. EX: Road Signs - which I don't post often as to keep the photos at a minimum. All my photos are attachments from my computer downloads.

> C: Soooo, HOW CAN WE HAVE ONLY 15 MB LEFT OUT OF 200 MB?? >> BUT HERE'S THE NEWS... I reduced the following picture 90% (not ideal; just an example) - in Microsoft Office Picture Manager (I'm sure there must be other programs also, where you can RESIZE). It tells you right there that instead of 167 KB in this pic, it is now 96x72 pixels, and SIZE: 2.17 KB (we are saving 165 KB!!!!!!!!!!!!!)A lovely feature on this site is that you can edit indefinitely your comments, so we can go back and change the size of any of our pics if we really want them saved. DELETE - OR - RESIZE! WHAT MORE DO WE NEED? HAVE A GREAT DAY!
