Status Tues 8th: Global footer now shows space used. We are inching back up to full.
Previously:
Our 200 MB storage allotment for this forum is officially used up. What to do?
For $3/month, we can bump that up to 500 MB, but because we blew through that 200 pretty quick, the 500 won't take long, either. Some threads are asking users to post photos regularly. Obviously that's ghoing to be a no-no if they attach them instead of calling them from a photo hosting service elsewhere. So we will have to change our ways, won't we?
Perhaps some kind of rule like: "Attach only intermittently, and rely on a hosting service for the majority of pix." Or maybe we will have to delete some thread's pix after a time period to view them.
Opinions?

Hello CampKohler,
I really enjoy posting and viewing photos on this website.
That being said:
I have no problem with removing posts after a certain period of time.
I have no objection to size restrictions or rules regarding posting of photos or pics.
I would be willing to learn to use a hosting service.
Some people may not be aware of how much MB is used when posting photos and making posters aware might also help.

LOL I knew this was going to happen, it seemed like an all-you-can-eat buffet until the bill comes...  Having a place to host has always been an issue for people, I guess we should delete when possible. Is there a way we can tell how close we are to filling the quota? |

I even was taught how to automatically post pictures... and as a test tried uploading an 800KB picture. I've deleted it as it has served its useful purpose: to test how much space we had. |

If theres are charges involved attachments at all are a matter of your discretion.
That having been said, the delete after a certain period of time is very reasonable.

I would be in favor of deleting "old" stuff automatically. We should probably reserve the first post of a thread for information about hew to use it; what should (or should not) be posted etc. My preference would be to delete by age, but some consideration might be made for size. A space limit might be a relatively small size limit with a requirement to provide links to photos, and other big items. Perhaps a start would be to shrink the size of the photos that appear on every post. Convertig them to .jpeg format with a lot of compression might dramatically shrink space requirements without losing too much resolution. I am open to other options. However, I would hate to see a greedy (or clueless) user upload megapixel photos that would force pure text messages to be deleted because they were just a couple days older that what the greedy user uploaded. I spent many years administering IT systems. Nothing gets used as much as a "free" resource. At one place, people would use the email system to archive everything because they "might" need it years in the future. You should have heard the moaning and groaning when we finally had to put an age limit on messages (even though we provided alternatives such as saving important information to their personal computers or to their allotted personal spce on networked servers. It will be important that any limits imposed are communicated to everyone. |

...I guess we should delete when possible.... Just arbitrarily deleting kind of defeats the purpose of having the attachment feature available. Maybe it could be used as a temporary buffer space like so: You can initially attach, but then, for long term, you are expected to change to a call to a hosting service. If you are a registered user, there would be the slight annoyance of editing out the attachment and editing in the call (for which I will publish the exact procedures); if a guest, you don't have edit privileges to do it, so you would have to expect that after some display period your pix would be deleted and substituted with boilerplate explaining why and linking to a tutorial on the subject. ...Is there a way we can tell how close we are to [reaching the limit]....? The global—meaning it appears on all forum pages—footer is not currently being used. I could periodically use it to post the storage status. If I will delete some pix that should give us a cushion and allow everyone to come up to speed on procedures and establish a place on a hosting service. Speaking of which, someone suggested one recently and I'll go dig that up now that we are against the wall. This paragraph will be replaced with that info soon. Proposal: For threads soliciting pix, perhaps a selection process (polling?) for pix of the week could be used to winnow the wheat from the chaff (to coin a phrase) and allow transfer by the thread's author of worthy pix to a hosting service, for which said author would post a list of calls in a separate archival thread. Or something like that to keep attaching use down to a manageable level. Let's hear more ideas on this fine mess. Maybe someone has that last piece of the puzzle or at least a helpful idea.

I have a great place to put all my pictures. In fact, I've been sucking them in from the working copy of my Website's pictures on my ThinkPad. I could put all of mine on my Website, don't necessarily have to work them into the Website.
Now, we have to figure out how to import a picture by HTML reference without putting it on ProBoards. I've got over a gigabyte free, and I'm only using about 4% of my bandwidth.
My housemates are going to keep me busy for a while today. Today's trash day, and my areas of the house are getting full of trash!

Not that it matters but is that $3/month or $3 for a permanent increase?
Can file sizes be limited to say ~150K instead of 1MB? I think GB's photo albums also significantly reduced photo sizes to save space, you could "upload" 6MB pictures but automatically trimmed it down to something like 800x600, saving disk space for them.

Personally, I'd delete anything taking up allotted storage after a 24 hour period as in reality who really gives a rip in going back and reviewing the vast majority so silly posts anyway...unless you've nothing to do but kill time and this place seems a likely squat...

No, the limiter is set at 1 MB. That is not to say that we couldn't voluntarily reduce resolution or size to consume a lot less space. Many images convey the necessary meaning without being HD or 4K. That principal could be made a part of the procedure. This is starting to remind me of water restrictions on WWII subs. "Can I take a shower on board?" Sure, but.... |
