How much space do we have left for messages in general? Or are we going to be blowing through that, too? Sounds like they may need the ability like The Other Forum That No Longer Exists In Its Former Form to get rid of ancient messages?

I just linked a picture that came off of my Website. Easy! (FWIW, they're not the sneakers I'm wearing today. Haven't yet taken a picture of them. Only got a new digital camera Wednesday, all the pictures on my Website are pre-Harvey.) I can now do more than three pictures on a single reply, providing that they're housed away from GBO!

I'm going through the political cartoons I've posted and switching as many as possible to URLs. Might be worth a MB or two. We'll see.

"Photo Attachment Stoage Status: 1 MB out of 200 left. (See announcement thread.)"
What's "Stoage?"

Howdy:
I don't post photos as I dont have the time. All I have is my avatar photo.
I do enjoy this site as it is nice to keep in touch with so many people who we have known for so many years.
Thanks for all your hard work on keeping this site up.

I do not think avatars are needed, deleted mine I think avatars are "a horse of a different of a different collar" and are not counted as attachment space. After all, they are limited by the fact that each member only gets one, and for advertising purposes, they need the maximum number of users. "The captain has turned off the avatar sign. Please re-add them, and you are now free to move about the thread."How much space do we have left for messages in general? I don't think there is any limit on posts. You can practically post War and Peace in the space that one pix takes. It's a small animal whose pelt is used make ermine garments, often worn by royalty. Oh, wait... That's a stoat. Never mind.
Note that despite all your efforts, the space used remains the same. I hope the readout for space used/remaining is correct and not some pseudo gadget. I'll take a look at other forums' read outs. The threads soliciting the posting of pix would probably be the most productive to concentrate our attention on.

Is there a way to automatically search through the posts for attachments and zap them when they get old, or does someone need to go and look for them manually?

There's a Manage Attachments area in Adminland which lists every single attachment and where it is located, so that can be used to clear out dead leaves. Before putting my heavy hand on that lever, I want to do some thinking and preparation in order to avoid Bull-in-China-Shop Syndrome.

I’m all for deleting older stuff, most of us only check back a day or two. It’s a new forum, there’s bound to be hiccups here and there. With input from all we should get it ironed out.

And so it is once again. When CK first started this project, I was wary and looked into costs. I found the ProBoards' Forum FAQ, which addressed the issue: Turns out "completely free" may be more like the type of "free" you get with "buy one, get one free" -- For that promo, "free" means half price. Looking around some more, I found a link to something called a Forum Help Guide. I found nothing under the plebe "User Guide" that was helpful, but under the "Admins and Moderators" heading, way down the list there's an item for " Upgrading Your Forum". That's a decent hint: Upgrading doesn't sound so free. Clicking that produces yet another list that includes as the third item: File Storage. Finally, we're getting somewhere! The File Storage page has 3 sub headings: Themes, Plug ins and Attachments. From the opening paragraph, which explains how you can learn about memory use, I'm starting to understand ProBoards' "completely free" concept. It's "free to create as many topics and discussions as you want" according to the FAQ -- It's just the memory use that costs money! Like the way razor handles used to be free, you only had to buy the blades . . . . The settings section of the File Storage page identifies the following "free" administrative options: A 4th option non "free" option allows the administrator to: "adjust the maximum file size@admin@admin@admin of the attachment if additional storage has been purchased (emphasis supplied)." So apparently the default setting is already at the minimum attachment size. At most, I'd think only one attachment should be allowed per post. A notice should be produced that indicates that posting attachments should be avoided and that photos one desires to use in a thread should be linked via photo sharing services. There are many of these that are free, I understand. I've never used one yet, but I'll be looking into it. It doesn't say that avatars use attachment space, but if they are uploaded, I'm guessing they do (edit) though I see that CK has indicated they don't in a post that popped up since I started on this post. Maybe CampKohler (Sacramento CA) can access the statistics and report back whether avatars are contributing to the problem and, if so, the extent. Those can probably be linked from photo sharing sites. The File Storage page goes on to explain that: Presumably administrative stats are available for all of those areas. Could they be cut and pasted into this topic so we can better understand how this racket works?
