Alabama is ranked #1. The Tide had no problems at all with dominating Louisville.

#25 Louisiana State upset #8 Miami 33-17. LSU should have been ranked higher while Miami should not have been ranked in the top 25.

Congrats to LSU and former Buckeye Joe Burrow for last night's beat down of #8 Miami in Jerry World. One game does not a powerhouse make, but Burrow showed he has the poise and the tools to be a starting QB for a high profile program. I have a lot more to say about Burrow's first start as a Tiger in my post about Burrow in the Ohio State thread. Good luck to Joe and the Tigers!

Tennessee was the only SEC team to lose in Week 1. Tennessee fan here to take my lumps. I thought we would be more competitive, but it looks like Butch Jones left the cupboard more bare than I realized.

I thought we would be more competitive, but it looks like Butch Jones left the cupboard more bare than I realized. The Volunteers should improve. It was only the first game of the season and their opponent was not the typical mid-major cupcake that most power conference teams play during the first game of the season. West Virginia is a legitimate top 20 team.

Louisiana State scored a huge victory for the SEC by beating up what was regarded as one of the best ACC teams.

Texas A&M fell to Clemson last night at home, 28-26. The 12th fan tried hard, but couldn't quite get it done. Down 14-3 at the half, A&M closed to a 2 point deficit, but couldn't convert a two point conversion with under a minute left.
There was a very controversial call that ended A&M's next to last possession. A receiver broke to the outside and down the sideline. I think he was preparing to dive for the pylon when a Tiger defender knocked the ball out of his hands. The ball carried along on pretty much the same plane landing out of bounds. The zebras ruled that the ball had passed through the end zone before landing out of bounds, so it was a touchback and Clemson's ball at the 20. If it had not crossed the goal line, it would have been A&Ms ball at the spot of the fumble, which would have made if first and goal from about the 2. Jimbo Fisher went ballistic after replay found the video evidence "inconclusive" and so the call on the field stood. I thought Fisher should have at least been flagged, maybe ejected for his antics.
I also thought the call on the field was right. This morning on ESPN College Final they led with that game and showed several replays. I used my DVR to go frame by frame through the fumble. The ball was twirling or spinning as it flew about 2 to 3 feet higher than the pylon. It looked to me that when the ball was over the pylon, part of it was actually over at least a square inch of the end zone, probably a few more. A football is several times as wide as the pylon, and looking down the sideline toward the endzone, the right point of the ball looks to be inside the edge of the pylon. Had the player been carrying it at the same angle and dived at the same angle the ball was flying, I would have ruled it a TD.
In the end, A&M forced a 3 and out and Clemson's punter shanked the punt out of bounds at the Clemson 49. A&M started that drive with 1:12 on the clock and, though out of timeouts, scored the TD that drew them within 2 points on that drive. So they ended up having the same chance they appeared to have before the touchback call.
It reinforces for me that coaches need to insist that their players stop reaching the ball out as they near the goal line when it's not 4th down and there's time for another play. Yes, those dives at the pylon are exciting and have a way of ending up on Sports Center. But so do the fumbles. Had the ruling been out of bounds there, I doubt replay would have even thought to review the play. So the ball would have quickly been marked ready to play at the 2, and the clock, then just over 2 minutes, would have started to roll. A&M would not have called timeout, as they would have wanted to run some clock to stop Clemson from having time to get into position for a game winning FG assuming A&M managed to tie it up. They would have ran the ball on first & goal, maybe getting in, maybe not but not caring as they would have had plenty of time to score their TD with their two timeouts.
Bottom line, A&M dug themselves a hole they couldn't quite crawl out of.
