With 3:31 to go in the first half of the Iowa/Wisconsin game, Wisconsin recovered a fumble by an Iowa punt returner. The zebras huddled, and by the time the pack leader turned on his mike, anyone watching the replay knew it was Bucky's ball. But the pack leader declared with certainty (as refs always do) that the runner was down by contact before the ball came loose and so it was Iowa's ball. He then said the play was under further review. The call on the field was reversed about as quickly as it ever happens. The only thing that made it take any time was determining the spot of the ball and the time on the clock.
I bring it up because I wonder how in the world a ref could get it so wrong? The ball carrier ran past a defender and it appeared the ball contacted the defender's hip and popped up in the air, fell on the ground and the defender who actually knocked the ball out was the one who dove on the ball. How could any ref claim to see the ball carrier go down before the ball came out in this circumstance? This is a clear case of a ref making a call where they didn't see what had happened.
If I find a replay of this (or if someone else finds one) I'll post it.
