I've started thinking about how to prevent another wasp nest. They have come back at least two or three seasons after the first one. They really seem to like that "cozy" space between my thermometer and the wall. One year I removed the old nest and the next year I left it. They came back and nested there again both ways. I appreciate your suggestion but I'd really rather not spend any money, or very little. Hmm, while reading this I got the idea of maybe wdding up some old plastic bags and sticking them in the space. It's a small space.
I've also been trying to think if there's any kind of aroma they don't like. I know that moths are not supposed to like lavender. I wonder if that would have any affect on wasps. I keep thinking I'll try it, but haven't yet.
So far we've co-existed ok, but I'd rather not share my balcony with them. And sometimes I like eating out there, but don't want to in case the food would attract them to me.
And did I tell you about the squirrels who have now found their way up to my third floor balcony? They scale the wall. I HATE them up here. It still freaks me out. So far it is mainly in the fall when they are looking for food to store for the winter, I presume. My neighbor below me has been feeding them for years even though she is not supposed to. I used to be concerned that it would encourage and embolden them to look up here, but for 20+ years it hadn't happened. Until it did.
It seems spring-like outside, even though it is way too early for spring in Minnesota. This has been a very crazy winter, with almost no snow and record-setting warm temps. There's no way to tell if it will continue this way or if winter will "bite us in the butt" when it should be spring.
Happy spring, if it is, where you are.

No I haven't tried the fake wasp nest. I was going to try something else first, but it's too late. I went outside last week when the weather was very warm and see they are already back. I'd read that they don't return to the same nest, but this is the second time I've left it and they returned. I don't want to use chemicals but thought about spraying some soap or something.

Hi goldie, Make sure to do it in the morning when it’s cooler and then quick run inside.
