Two former Buckeyes from last year's team's decisions were proved to be sound ones Friday night.
DE Nick Bosa was selected as the overall 2nd pick by the San Francisco 49ers. Bosa played in only the first 3 games last season after going down with a groin injury that ended up ending his college career. Bosa could have rehabbed and possibly made it back for the BIG championship (at less than 100%) as well as the team's bowl game, but decided not to push it, withdraw from school, and focus on preparation for the NFL draft. He joins his brother, former Buckeye Joey Bosa and his father (college not to be named) as one of only two father/2 son families to all be first round draft picks. The other? Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. That's decent company.
Duane Haskins had been waiting three years in JT Barrett's shadow while Barrett wrapped up what seemed like about a ten season tenure as the Buckeye's starting QB. Ok, it was only five. Still. Anyway, after all that experience, Barrett went undrafted last spring and ended up signing on to the Saints' practice squad, last I heard. Haskins had to beat out Joe Burrow for the starting gig. Burrow transferred to LSU at the beginning of summer and will likely end up a first rounder in 2020. Before the BIG schedule began, Haskins caused just about everyone to say, "JT Who?" Though Barrett set a ton of Buckeye career QB records (longevity being the chief factor), Haskins set a bunch of single season marks and ended up with an invite to NYC for a front row seat at the Heisman ceremony. Not too bad for a 1st year starter!
As the season wore on, there was little doubt that Haskins would not return this fall and, shortly after the Buckeyes' Rose Bowl victory that GTH reported on above, Haskins announced that he would forego his last year of eligibility and enter the draft. Friday night, that decision was rewarded by the Washington Redskins, who claimed Haskins with the overall 15th pick. Some thought Miami might take him at #6 (and I heard some talk -- nothing I found serious -- that he could go #1), but the Dolphins went with Duke's QB. Haskins obviously understood where he ranked, wisely deciding to stay home in Maryland rather than sit in the NFL's green room in Nashville until his name was called.
Seven other Buckeyes heard their names called last weekend for a total of nine more NFL draft choices, including the two first rounders highlighted above.
And now it's on to the 2019 season! Go Buckeyes!!

It's Dwayne, not Duane... LOL! ;) Ok, make it Dwayne. Initially I had "Clem." I don't know why. I did it all season. I guess that's just what happens when a guy is only around for one year as a starter. And memories fade -- like that Barnett guy I mentioned.

As the sports troll notes, the Buckeyes scored a convincing win against Florida Atlantic 45-21, led by new quarterback Justin Fields.
The Buckeyes got off to a rollicking start with 4 TDs in the first quarter but FAU rallied and slowed down the Buckeyes advance, actually outscoring them in the second quarter 3-0.
This was coach Ryan Day's first game as the head coach (not an interim one like the first 3 games last year). This game also debuted a new zone defense by the Bucks. However the game was marred somewhat by 2 Buckeyes turnover, one a lateral (not a forward) pass from Fields that was dropped and recovered; and a ball that slipped from JK Dobbin's grasp. Still, there were may impressive performance by Fields, Dobbins and the Buckeyes defense.
Work still needs to be done, but a good start.
Next Saturday, the Cincinnati Bearcats come to the 'Shoe.

Saturday, when the Buckeyes played the UC Bearcats, I saw the game I expected to see the previous Saturday against FAU -- a blowout. I honestly wasn't expecting that, not with former OSU defensive coordinator (and interim head coach in 2001) Luke Fickell at the helm for Cincinnati.
The Cats never got off the ground, being totally dominated by the Bucks. Justin fields had 2 rushing TDs and threw for several more. JK Dobbins and the OSU Defense turned in stellar performances, the defense getting the shutout, the first since 2017.
Finals score: 42-0.
Next, the Buckeyes go on the road to Indiana.

I see no one ever finished out the Buck's 2019 season in this topic, as the Bucks won the Big Ten and got into the playoffs, only to lose to old nemesis Clemson in the first round.
The really big news last season was former OSU second string Joe Burrow, an Athens Ohio native who transferred to LSU, catching fire and leading team to the playoffs, trouncing Nick Saban's Crimson Tide in the process. Then they won the national title! Geaux Tigers!
And in the 2020 NFL draft -- turned into a virtual event by the pandemic -- Joe Burrow, OSU defensive back Chase Young and OSU offensives tackle Jeff Okudah were the first, second and third picks>. COunting Burrow, that means Ohio State got all 3 picks! Go Bucks!
Will we have a 2020 season? As of right now we have a shortened conference-only season, with The Game against That Team Up North scheduled for October, not the traditional November date. And one Division 1A conference, the MAC, has cancelled their fall season entirely.

Thanks in part to pressure applied by Buckeye QB Justin Fields, it's on again. Sadly, due to the waffling, the B1G won't start for a few more weeks. B1G 2020 Schedule:

Saturday's Buckeye game against Maryland has been cancelled due to an elevated infection rate in the Terp's program. The game will not be rescheduled. It's disappointing and just another reason the B1G was wrong to delay so long in starting the season. Outbreaks on teams are inevitable and having additional weeks that could be used to play would have made a lot of sense.
