How much space do we have left for messages in general? Or are we going to be blowing through that, too? Message space is unlimited, else I wd be typg lk this to cnsrv spc. No probs with avatars either (which are tiny things unless of monster shoes ).

Message space is unlimited. I've been retired from software engineering for just under nine years. But I have not yet seen that Seagate or WD have perfected the bottomless hard drive. I was wondering if we broke GBO last night when it was returning a 503 HTML error code. Only temporarily, apparently.

Flickr, a host site as opposed to GBO, or a photo storage site? The alternative to attachments (stored on this site with a 200 MB limit) is to host the images on some other site and call them from posts here using the code created by the insert image icon (picture frame icon). Flickr is probably the most widely known, but is just one of many host sites. I will write a tutorial so that nobody has to stumble around like a goofy dufas to figure it out. It's not intuitive if you want to just have the image to show without jumping out to a Flickr page. I guess I am about 50% done on my research, so the end is in sight. Then I will give a 30-days notice to allow members to convert their attachments to calls before the old attachments are replaced with some boilerplate words in their posts, thus freeing up future attachment space. An instruction in the newbie thread will explain this process and link to the tutorial. Then, in the future, members may: - Attach and abandon an image to later automatic deletion with no further warning
- Attach and later edit in a call to a host site (and hopefully delete the attachment themselves) some time before the automatic deletion occurs
- Use a call to a host site for a permanent image
Then we can dispense with the global footer about how much attachment space remains.

It's interesting there are people with no responsibility, and just use up all the shared resources without cleaning up after they're done with it...

"I will write a tutorial so that nobody has to stumble around like a goofy dufas to figure it out." ~ CampKohler Actually goofy dufas is kind of fun. You get used to it after a while. Such as... can't turn Italics off right now.

Italics seemed to be frozen that day. Other buttons were working.

Should change the forum footer from
Photo Attachment Storage Status:0 MB out of 200 left on 17th. (See announcement thread.)
to
No more attachment space available, ever, until people start deleting old ones!!! (READ announcement thread!)
or will there finally be automated deletion someday?

I have had a lot to do lately, so I haven't gotten to my goal of providing a tutorial/giving some warning/deleting attachments. So, therefore and whereas, I will not be so pessimistic as to use the word never; let's call it "pretty soon now" (which, if you will recall, was an often-used catch phrase in the old Byte magazine, meaning not never, but don't hold your breath).

Or, in the forseeable future...

Then there's also the possibility there are attachments made by people that haven't been back in months... will those be set in store for perpetuity?

That's a good point.

I did not even know you could host images on this site, other than your profile picture/avatar.

Link all you want, Inline all you want, just can't have it host...
And it's 2019, no updates on the zero. I still think my comment is correct, it's indeed "NO SPACE LEFT EVER AGAIN!"
