I learned of Nelson's passing this afternoon listening to the SeriusXM Satellite Survey from this week in 1962. His instrumental, Drums Are My Beat had peaked at #29 the preceding week but was still in the top 40.

Madeline Albright, 84, first woman to server as US Secretary of State, died Wednesday, March 23, of cancer.
Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1937 to Jewish parents, Marie Jana Korbelova was taken to Great Britain as her parents fled the Nazis 2 years after her birth and converted to Catholicism. Albright was unaware of her Jewish ancestry until a Washington Post story revealed it in 1997. Several of her relatives including 3 grandparents perished in the Nazi Holocaust.
After a brief stint in postwar Czechoslovakia, the Korbelovas fled again, this time from the Communists, and came to the US as refugees, where Marie became a US citizen, graduated form Wellsey College, met and married Joseph Albright and did postgraduate work in international studies. Her political career began in the 1970s with Senator Edmund Muskie and she went on give foreign policy advice to 3 Democratic Presidential candidates -- Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis and Bill Clinton. The latter, as President, appointed her as UN Ambassador and in 1997, to her historic role as Secretary of State. In both roles, she grappled with conflict in Bosnia, the massacre in Rwanda and other issues in the post-Cold War world.
After George W Bush's election, she taught at Georgetown, did private consulting and remained active in Presidential politics, supporting Hilary Clinton in 2008. In 2012, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

(SUVFan is generally up on musician's deaths>. I'm surprised I got to this first).I just heard about it on the local news, gth. The Foo Fighters are not exactly a group I know much about. From the news report I heard, a massive heart attack would not be a surprising cause of death. That's an age when that seems to happen. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, I lost a couple of colleagues that way.

I'm not up on them either, SVF. My knowledge of rock music tapers off in the early '80s. I couldn't pick a Foo Fighters hit out of a jukebox -- if there were still such things as jukeboxes.

Bobby Rydell was slightly before my time. The only one of his hits I was familiar with, was "Volare".

Dwayne Haskins May 3, 1997 – April 9, 2022 ESPN reports that:I'd lost track of Haskins after he was drafted as a 1st round choice, 15th overall, by the Washington Redskins Football Team (they've changed their name again since) 2 years ago. His performance for Washington was disappointing but Pittsburgh signed him in January and he was expected to compete for the starting QB job that opened when Dan Rothlesberger retired.

SUVFan got there first, but as a Buckeye I owe my remarks:
Dwayne Haskins, 24, former Ohio State quarterback, died this morning (Saturday, April 9).
SUVFan covered Haskin's career at Ohio State in the NFL, except that Haskins had served a full season with the Steelers. He would have competed for the starting position vacated by Ben Rothelsberger's retirement.
'According to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol, a fatal crash was reported at 6:37 a.m. on I-595 westbound between I-95 North and South involving a pedestrian and a dump truck. Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda confirmed Haskins died after he was hit by a dump truck.
Prior to the collision, Haskins was walking westbound on 595 and attempting to cross lanes on the highway for “unknown reasons,” Miranda wrote in an email.
Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene. A traffic homicide investigation is underway.
Haskins is survived by his wife, Kalabrya, parents Dwayne and Tamara, and a younger sister, Tamia, with whom he was extremely close.'

Gilbert Gottfried February 28, 1955– April 12, 2022 NBC News reports that: "Gilbert Gottfried, iconic comedian, dies at 67 after long illness"
I tried to find a representative video clip of Gottfried at work. I found what the host of Hollywood Squares dubbed their most unusual show, which featured vintage Gottfried:

I had not heard of Gilbert Gottfried, but he was the voice of Jafar's talking parrot Iago on Aladdin (and its sequels), and the first voice of the famous Aflac duck.
That Hollywood Squares sequence is hilarious! I had no idea that the show was back on TV. I remember well the '70s original hosted by Peter Marshall, with regulars like Charlie Weaver and Wally Cox, and Ohio's own irrepressible Paul Lynde as the reigning center square!
In Glibert Gottfried, Lynde had a worthy successor. RIP.

I overlooked this one as well, Wilson's band The Ventures, which was influential in establishing "surf music" as a genre, recorded the full-length version of the Hawaii Five-O theme song.
Listening to this I can hear Steven McGarrett, played by Jack Lord in the original series, saying, "Book 'em Danno!"

Naomi Judd January 11, 1946 – April 30, 2022 The Tenessean headline states that:Naomi Judd, Grammy-winning matriarch of country music's The Judds, dead at 76 I'm not much of a country music fan but I certainly recognize Judd's name.
