Olivia Newton-John, 73, Grammy Award winning singer, died today (August 8). Diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1990s, Newton-John had revealed in 2018 that her cancer had returned in 2013 and later metastasized to her spine.
Born in Cambridge, England she grew up in Melbourne Australia, where she won a TV talent contest in her teens. Signed by Decca Records in 1966, her big break came in 1973 with the country hit "Let Me Be There". The following year she recorded "I Honestly Love You," which won Grammys for record of the year and best female pop vocal performance.
In 1978, she starred opposite John Travolta in the movie "Grease" where she recorded more hits "You're the One That I Want" and "Summer Nights" with Travolta and "Hopelessly Devoted to You" solo. Other hits included "Xanadu" in 1980, from a movie where she co-starred with Gene Kelly, and "Physical" in 1982, which won her another Grammy for video of the year.
Olivia Newton-John had a lovely singing voice, which in my opinion, was not showcased properly in many of her hit songs. One that absolutely allowed her voice to shine was a song she recorded for the group Mannheim Steamroller, famous for their modernistic treatment of Christmas songs and carols. On their 2007 album, Christmas Song, Newton-John record "Christmas Lullaby", a song written by Chip Davis. Maybe I'm an old softie, but this song of a mother singing over her sleeping child on Christmas night brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it.

The tragedy of Anne Heche highlights an interesting fact that is very "politically incorrect".
As SUVFan notes, Anne Heche was know as the same-sex partner of Ellen DeGeneres when the latter "came out" in 1997. but Heche, who broke up with Degeneres in 2000, went on to marry two men -- first Coleman "Coley" Laffoon from 2001 to 2009, then James Tupper from 2009 to 2018.
Wait, what? She wasn't really "born that way"? I guess her lifestyle was a choice. And she changed her mind.

And she changed her mind. To be fair, I think Ellen could have that impact on many people . . . .

Mikhail Gorbachev, 91, last leader of the Soviet Union, died today, August 30.
Assuming power in 1985 after the death of Konstantin Chernenko, Gorbachev intended to introduce reforms and modernize Soviet Communism, with the often-repeated keywords "glasnost (openness)" and "perestroika (restructuring)". Gorbachev led the USSR during Ronald Reagan's second term of office, dealing with the US Strategic Defense Initiative, US support for the Polish workers movement Solidarity led by Lech Walesa (and encouraged by Pope St John Paul II) and Reagan's memorable "Mr Gorbachev, Tear down this wall!" speech in 1987 in Berlin. In 1989, the eastern European satellite nations each threw off Communism, including East Germany, who did tear down the Berlin Wall before merging with West Germany in 1990. The Soviet Union collapsed into its constituent republics at the end of 1991, ending Gorbachev's tenure in office.
Gorbachev typically is given a great deal of credit for ending the Cold War. And in truth, his reforms did much to lessen the totalitarian grip on the USSR and its satellites. However, it is clear he never intended the Communist Party, the Warsaw Pact or the USSR itself to come to an end. He didn't really end the Cold war, so much as unintentionally unleash forces that ended it, forces stoked by Reagan and John Paul II. I suspect the very reason the Soviet old guard let a relatively young reformer come to power, was pressure exerted by Reagan, and the budding revolution in Poland. Gorbachev's career was more an effect of, rather than a cause of, the forces that ended of the Cold War.
Nevertheless, liberals loved him, and he received the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize.

Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, 96, passed away today (September 8) at her official Scottish residence, Balmoral Castle.
Elizabeth II has been Queen of England longer than almost all of us, including myself, have been alive. And unless you are in your late 70s or older, likely you don't remember a time when she was not on the throne. She reigned during the administration of 14 US Presidents, from Harry Truman to Joe Biden, meeting all of them except LBJ. This week, she formally appointed her 15th Prime Minister, Liz Truss. Her first Prime Minister, reprising his wartime role, was Winston Churchill.
In 1952, the Queen still ruled over an empire over which the sun never set. Most of British overseas territories have since become independent, most of them within the British Commonwealth, several of them stlll with her as Queen.
Born in 1926, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was not originally seen as heir to the British throne. But when her uncle, King Edward VIII abdicated in 1936, her father Prince Albert became King George VI, and young Elizabeth became first in line of succession.
During World War II, Princess Elizabeth recorded radio messages to Britain's children. And, along with many other young girls, performed auxiliary wartime service. in her case, Elizabeth was trained as a truck mechanic.
After the war, she met Royal Naval officer Phillip Mountbatten, who had royal lineage of the continental House of Battenberg. They were married in 1947. Prince Phillip passed away last year and was remembered here.
Ascending to the throne in 1952 when King George died of cancer, she stepped into a life of public service to which she dedicated her life, and did so magnificently.
Elizabeth and Phillip had four children: Charles, Prince of Wales (now King), Edward, Anne and Andrew. I'm not going to cover the drama of her children's lives, except that they caused her much heartbreak, mostly borne by her privately. But her biggest crisis was probably when the fairytale marriage of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer, broke up. Princess Diana then led an independent life, making many wonder what would happen when Charles ascended the throne. But Diana was to die in a car crash in Paris in 1997. The Queen, in a rare miscue, was slow to show signs of public grief over Diana, who was greatly loved by the public. Subsequent to Diana's death, Charles married his old flame, Camilla Parker-Bowles, who while not greatly liked was much less dramatic than Diana.
Charles will shortly choose his own regnal name, from among his Christian baptismal names Charles Phillip Arthur George. Should he retain the name of Charles, he will become Charles III, following Charles I, who was executed after the English Civil War in 1649, and Charles II, who died in 1685.
The Queen is dead.
Long live the King!

Jerry Lee Lewis, 87, pioneering rock'n'roll singer and piano player, died Friday (October 28) of natural causes at his home in Northern Mississippi near Memphis.
Rising up from a dirt poor background in Louisiana, Lewis's father mortgaged his farm to buy his son a piano. After being kicked out of a Bible college for playing a boogie-woogie rendition of "My God Is Real," lewis started playing clubs. His big break came in 1956, auditioning for Sun Records in Memphis, a label that also signed Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Elvis Presley. Lewis became a smash hit with "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Great Balls of Fire". But then in 1958, he married his 13 year old cousin Myra Gale Brown. Initially with Lewis claiming she was 15, the truth came out during his tour in England, and the tour was cut short in the face of protests. (That marriage was actually Lewis's third. After Brown divorced the womanizing Lewis in 1970, he was married four more times).
Lewis continued to record and tour, but his records got little airplay due to the scandal. And the Beatle led-British Invasion was different than Lewis and his energetic boogie-woogie piano style. Lewis eventually made a comeback of sorts as a country music singer, but never as big a star as in the '50s.
But in his heyday, he amazed the pianist Liberace with the speed of his piano playing. And he inspired a British piano player named Reggie Dwight, later to be known as Elton John.

Kirsnik Khari Ball, a/k/a Takeoff June 18, 1994 – November 1, 2022 TMZ reports that the rapper known as Takeoff, one of three members of the group called the Mingos, was shot early this morning at a Houston bowling alley and is dead at 28.
Not mentioned in the article were elements of Takeoff's checkered past, which Wikipedia captured here. This included an arrest for drug and firearms charges in 2015, being removed from a flight in 2019, and alleged involvement in a sexual abuse case in which charges were dropped. No details are available yet regarding the perpetrator or the circumstances, though the linked story notes that Takeoff had posted a selfie video from the bowling alley prior to the shooting. It's not known if that video attracted the perp.
I'm no rap fan and was unaware of the group or the deceased before seeing the story. Still, I find it very noteworthy in these troubled times.
