Mickey Gilley March 9, 1936 – May 7, 2022 SiriusXM reported that:
Mickey Gilley has passed away in Branson, Missouri, at the age of 86. I've seen a number of Tributes to Gilley since his passing. I remember seeing Urban Cowboy -- it may be the last movie I saw at a drive in! -- and, though I'm not a country fan, most of the music in the movie was OK.

James Caan, 82, Oscar nominated actor, died Wednesday (July 6). No cause of death was made public.
Caan's Oscar nomination came for the role of Vito Corleone's older hot-headed son Sonny, in The Godfather. Caan was a favorite of director Francis Ford Coppola who cast him in that role.
He appeared in many other films. Two that I particularly remember are Rollerball and Misery. In Rollerball, set in a dystopian future where ruling corporations entertain the masses with the violent sport of rollerball, Cann as the star player Jonathon E, defies the corporations, playing in -- and surviving -- in the world championship game. In Misery, Cann, acting with Kathy Bates, Caan is a romance novel author held captive by a crazed fan (Bates) to get him to write the ending she wants.

Caan was great as Sonny in The Godfather. I also remember seeing him in Brian's Song.

Tony Sirico July 24, 1942 – July 8, 2022 According to Variety, Tony Sirico, who played gangster Paulie Walnutsa on The Sopranos, passed away Friday at the age of 79, about 2 weeks short of his 80th birthday. I was never much of a fan of The Sopranos but you couldn't have lived back then and been unaware of the show. But that show was far from Sirico's only acting credit:

Earlier today I heard a report that Tony Dow, the actor who played Wally Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver had passed away. When I just searched for the story, I learned that report was inaccurate as this report says he's still with us, noting the earlier story.

Catching up. . .
Shinzo Abe, 67, former Japanese prime minister, died Friday, July 8, felled by an assasin's bullet.
Abe served as prime minister from 2006 to 2007, then from 2012 to 2020. Abe was the youngest prime minister in Japan's postwar history when he first took office. After stepping down due to health issues, he remained influence in Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
Abe's killer used a "homemade shotgun" to get around Japan's strict gun restrictions.

The TV show "Leave It to Beaver" was slightly before my time. I remember seeing occasional afternoon reruns with I was young.
For some reason, I happen to remember seeing Beaver's and Wally's mom (played by the late Barbara Billigsley) running a vacuum cleaner in a dress (not a "house dress" but a relatively nice dress) and heels.
With Tony Dow's passing, Jerry Mathers (Theodore Cleaver, aka "the Beaver") is the only surviving cast member.

Bill Russell February 12, 1934 – July 31, 2022 CBS Sports reports that Bill Russell, 11-time NBA champion and Boston Celtics legend, has died at 88. A statement released by the family is reprinted at the link. Though I have memories of Russell as a player, I have stronger memories of his AT&T commercials where he'd toss a ball in from "long distance!"

Nichelle Nichols, 89, groundbreaking African-American actress, died Saturday, July 30, of natural causes.
As Starfleet Lieutenant and communications officer Uhura in the original Star Trek TV series and several Star Trek movies, Nichols made history. The Rev Martin Luther King Jr called her role the first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a Black woman in television history.”.
When I was a kid, watching Star Trek, and then later watching reruns in the '70s, the significance of her role went well over my head. But given that Star Trek was prime time TV during the 1966-68 seasons, while Jim Crow was very much alive in much of the country, that was monumental. In one episode, she kissed captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, in what was likely the first TV interracial kiss.
Before Star Trek, she was a talented singer with a four-octave range. She landed a role in an earlier Gene Roddenberry series, “The Lieutenant,” which led to her Trek role.
After Trek, she worked with NASA and the space program, make it more diverse.
With Nichols's passing, the major cast members of the original series still living are:
William Shatner (Captain James Tiberias Kirk) George Takei (Lieutenant Sulu) Walter Koenig (Ensign Chekov)

Vin Scully November 29, 1927 – August 2, 2022 I just heard a report on tonight's edition of ABC News that Vin Scully, the iconic voice of the L.A. Dodgers, passed away yesterday at the age of 94.
ESPN (Disney owns both ABC and ESPN) reports that There may have been a better sports announcer but I can't think of one offhand. Scully always added to the telecast, never detracting in any way.
