Black holes may have arrived before our galaxy. Research from astronomers examining radio-frequency pictures that provide data about early galaxies suggests the black holes may have gotten an early start. "The significant implication is that the black holes formed first and then somehow they formed a stellar galaxy around them," said Chris Carilli, of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Socorro, New Mexico, one of the report's researchers.Who knew?

A wild dog is the most successful predator. The apex predator with the highest kill rate is not the lion, the cheetah, or the wolf, it's the African wild dog. According to researchers, these lean, big-eared canines are noted for having a kill rate of 85 percent—lions get just 17 to 19 percent—while peregrine falcons get 47 percent of their targets. Another animal with surprisingly high kill rates? Domestic cats, which kill more than 30 percent of their targets. Who knew?

On January 7th, National Tempura Day encourages us to celebrate with a dish made with a tempura batter. This Japanese fare is made up of either seafood or vegetables dipped in batter and deep-fried.
Portuguese Jesuit missionaries introduced the recipe for tempura to Japan during the sixteenth century (around 1549). Many believe Portuguese Jesuit Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan, loved tempura. Since the Genroku era (September 1688 – March 1704), tempura was traditionally a very popular food eaten at street vendors called ‘yatai.’
Today, chefs all over the world include tempura dishes on their menus. They use a wide variety of different batters and ingredients.
