Who Knew??? National Tennessee Day recognizes the Volunteer State on October 26. Tennessee was the 16th state admitted to the union. The great state brings with it the Great Smoky Mountains, centers for blues and country music, and depth of history that surges through art.
As the gateway to the deep south, Tennessee experienced heavy burdens during the Civil War. As a slaveholding state with many Union sympathizers and Union occupying units, Tennessee was often as divided as the country during the war. It was the only state to have a battle or skirmish in every county.

Charles Dickens Always Had His Bed Facing North. Charles Dickens was responsible for writing classic literary works like Great Expectations and Oliver Twist. And while he obviously had a talent for the written word, he was an insomniac who believed that his creativity was dependent on his bed pointing northward. He also insisted on sleeping right in the middle with his arms outstretched and his hands equal distances from the edge. Who knew?

October 28th sets aside National First Responders Day to honor the men and women who act quickly when an emergency is at hand.
First responders dedicate their lives to save lives. They are the people who run toward a crisis while the rest of the world flees. According to the Department of Homeland Security, 4.6 million career and volunteer first responders support the communities where they live. They are firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics, and 911 operators. In an emergency, they’re the first on the scene. These dedicated professionals answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line.

One Region in Canada Has Lower Gravity Than Other Parts of the World. In Canada, the Hudson Bay region seems to be "missing" gravity. This strange phenomenon was first identified in the 1960s, according to Global News. Scientists believe that it's caused by "a combination of convection occurring in the Earth's mantle and the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which left an indent on the area after it melted 10,000 years ago." That indent means less mass, which in turn means less gravity. Who knew?
