A lot of players passed Tiger after he finished his round. He slipped to a 20 way tie for 43rd place. The co-leaders are at -12, 9 shots ahead of Tiger.
Had he managed those two extra strokes under par yesterday and made it to 5 under, he'd have been in an 11 way tie for 20th, still 7 behind, but a 5 stroke gain on moving day is very normal, and it would be easy to see him in the thick of it tomorrow. From 43rd, he pretty much needs to play lights out today and still needs some help from those above him.
He's scheduled to start his round right about now, at 11 am.
Developing.

Tiger struggled through most of his round today, especially on the front 9. He bounced back a bit on the back, making birdie on 17, fighting his way back to level par for the day, and still tied for 43rd where he started. It turns out that his round yesterday -- like many duffer's rounds -- was very good except for the 17th, where he made a quadruple bogey (video at the link). Edit: I meant to cover a facet of Tiger's hockey stick on 17 yesterday. It didn't have to happen, apparently. Under a new golf rule, Tiger could have dropped on the walkway of the 17th hole after his first water ball. Though doubtful that he holes that one yesterday (the old Tiger would have been even money to do so), he almost certainly makes a 4. Starting today at -6 and only 6 off the lead would have been so much different from starting 3 shots worse. The SB Nation folks went out of their way to excuse Tiger's failure to use the new rule to his advantage. To me, it's just more evidence of how checked out he has been since his comeback began. The old Tiger never missed a chance to benefit from a rule. I remember like it was yesterday the day he (with a little help from about a dozen newly found friends) expanded the loose impediment rule: Though some say he got even with today's birdie, by my math he's still +3 over the two days on that hole, and not close to even. He's also out of the running at -3, now 12 strokes off the pace, with a lot of good golfers between him and another Player's trophy.

Tiger's 2019 highlight was his surprising win at the Masters.
Now a month and a half away from defending that title, he's not playing well at all.
In the Genesis Open at Riviera, which Tiger hosts, among the players who made the cut, he ended up 22 shots off Adam Scott's winning pace at +11.
After starting respectably with a -2 69, each round got progressively worse. Yesterday, i saw him 4 putt! 3 of them were inside 4 feet!
It's looking interesting.

It's uncertain when we'll see Tiger on the prowl again? The Mexico Championship is up next, but Tiger's skipping it to rest up: This article does a decent job of forecasting Tiger's schedule. It nailed his appearance at Torrey Pines and that he's skip Pebble and Mexico. Riviera was a given due to his hosting duties. He could show up at the Honda in a couple of weeks, Bay Hill in two weeks, and/or the Players in three weeks. No way he does all 3. I don't see him skipping The Players, a great tuneup for the Masters, which follows 3 weeks after that. I'd guess he'll play the Honda, too, wanting to replace that last place finish he turned in yesterday as his most recent memory, and then take the following week off.

The question of Tiger's next tournament appearance lingers. As I figured out composing my general golf topic post this morning and scanning through the link to the field, he's not playing at Bay Hill this week. He's won Bay Hill a whopping 8 times, so there had to be a strong tug to play there. But the Players' Championship that starts next weekend is way more prestigious with an incredibly strong field. Tiger's agent wouldn't commit Tiger to the Players but did say that back issues are what had kept him down since his last place finish at Riviera when he played last. Last week's Honda Classic tournament at PGA would have a natural for Tiger, as it's just a short ride to West Palm from Tiger's massive home on Jupiter Island, so his back must be bugging him. It could be the reason he's sitting out Bay Hill as well, or it might be that he's using his back as an excuse and the real reason is that he doesn't want to play 2 weeks in a row, and if his back was still ouchy leading up to the Honda entry deadline, there was probably still a little sensitivity last Friday, too, and playing at Bay Hill would probably be inconsistent with practicing for the Players. Developing.

Tiger Woods to skip 2020 The Players Championship, with his back still troubling him
Edit: The original headline had a typo, spelling the golfer's name "Woosd", almost poetic considering the significance of the announcement. I do remember when he was running away with majors, there were predictions that he would have back issues when he was older. Obviously, he's concerned that his back isn't healthy enough to be able to bounce back for The Masters. I don't blame him even if it's a crapshoot as to whether he could play -- I'd make sure I played in The Masters if I could play only once a year. He probably has little (I'd say none but I learned that lesson from his last US Open win) chance at a successful title defense at Augusta in about a month, especially considering how little he's played, it's still one of the most forgiving courses they play in terms of missing fairways and still having a shot. So anything can happen.

ESPN's Bob Harig is all over it in this story. It's refreshing to see a reporter reject the garbage Woods' agent tried to feed the network with his tweet that said Tiger's back wasn't ready for the Players but, longterm it wasn't a concern. Of course, Woods has never been forthcoming about what's going on in his world. There's no requirement that he bear all, but his history of sugar coating (being kind here) over the years provides no reason to believe he's being anything close to straightforward now. Apparently his PR people must demand that he say something and this is the kind of thing they come up with and then when questions persist, they can dismiss them saying they've said all they're going to about the subject, which presents much differently than saying repeatedly that they have nothing at all to say. Now that he's a mature 44, it would be nice if Tiger would start to deal with the media and his fans in a straight forward manner but, obviously, that's not going to happen.

Tiger didn't end up skipping The Players as it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. In his first post Pandemic shutdown appearance this week at Jack Nicklaus' The Memorial (delayed from early June to mid July), Tiger made the cut right on the +3 cut line and currently is tied for 31st place at +2 through 6 holes in the final round. He's won the event 5 times but won't win today, 14 shots behind current leader John Rahm. Conditions in the (possibly to be renamed) Columbus area are hot and windy with, of course, a chance of T-storms this afternoon. A weak line of storms is current moving through the northern half of Ohio with a much stronger line trailing it but Tiger should be finished and will have made the relatively short trip to OSU's Don Scott Airport, southeast of Dublin (Normally 45 minutes during the Memorial but probably only a 20 minute drive with no spectator related traffic) and be on his private jet winging it back home to Florida, well before a storm could become an issue.

I proved I'm no better than you're average weatherguesser. They just blew the horn to restart play. Tiger apparently had hit into a greenside bunker on the last just before the horn blew for a weather delay (I'm on the other side of town and have had no weather issues yet, so maybe it is Chief Leatherlips!). After my post, things went south for Tiger. He finished the front nine with double, bogey, bogey and added another bogey on 11, soaring to +6 but recovered with birdies on 16 and 17. He left himself a slick little 6 footer for par on the last and missed it on the amateur side of the cup.
So he's done now at +5, currently good for 39th, posting a final round 76, the same as his 2nd round score, to go with a pair of 71s. He won't be happy.
That larger system is approaching and Jim Nance is wondering if they can finish today's round before it hits. Tiger will most likely be nearly home by then.

Tiger was pressed in his postgame interview by the CBS interviewer for when he'd play next (the PGA, 2020's first major is coming up in a few weeks) but he played coy, saying "we'll see."

Tiger ended up in a tie for 40th and only 13 strokes out of the lead thanks to Rahm giving up 5 strokes over the last 6 holes, including the 2 shot penalty discussed in the general discussion topic.
I had flipped over to Golf channel to hear some of the post tourney wrap up and they started a replay with Tiger on the 7th green. He was looking at maybe 15 feet, 20 max, for par and missed the cup by 2 or 3 inches, sending the ball 5 feet past the hole. His comebacker was equally wide, so the hockey stick was the result of a three put, unheard of in Tiger's prime.

An article posted on Tigerwoods.com does a fair job of reporting Tiger's performance at The Memorial but he's still being coy about his next appearance, saying only that he, "needs more reps". Now there's a major understatement! But the article (obviously put together by his publicist) teases that the statement does not indicate if that means competitive reps. It's a practical certainty that he'll play the PGA in SF the first week of August. Given his back trouble earlier in the year, with no announcement about playing again this week, which would have been back to back weeks, I don't see him playing next week either as that would set up back to back weeks ending with the PGA. I'd guess he'll log some practice rounds at TPC Harding Park over the next two weeks and spend a lot of time working on his putting.

Tiger shot a 2 under 68 in the first round of the 2020 PGA Championship. He trails current Jason Day, who shot a 65, by 3 shots, though play is continuing.
Tigers's off to a decent start, looks likely to make the cut and hang around SanFrancisco for the weekend with a chance to add to his major hardware.
