CNN has a great article summarizing Tiger's performance. They're making a little more of it than I did but most of the media is hoping that Tiger makes a comeback as that's good for all of them.
The story does indicate that Tiger hopes to play about once per month next year and that he's targeting the Riviera (I don't do most sponsor names when I know the old tourney name) tournament, formerly known as the Glenn Campbell LA Open:
The story also says Tiger's next event will happen in 10 days at a father-son tournament that tees off in Orlando, Florida on December 14.
Here's the whole thing: www.cnn.com/2023/12/04/sport/tiger-woods-hero-world-challenge-golf-spt-intl/index.html

While watching the trash Open as I call it yesterday, I saw ads for next week's tournament at Rivera CC. Tiger hosts that tourney and had said he planned to play.

Tiger's first round at Riviera was up and down. Heading to the last, he was level par with 4 bogies and 4 birdies. That would not have made him happy.
He drilled his drive on 18 to the right side of the fairway and left himself 160 something yards to the pin. The ball was slightly below his feet but the shot he needed to hit was a baby fade to give himself a chance at his fifth birdie and an under par finish. Instead, he shanked the ball of the hosel of the club toward a pair of trees. Remarkably, there was a small gap between the trees that Tiger was able to thread his 3rd shot through from 120 yards and it rolled up the green, stopping pin high, 30 some feet from the hole. He missed that putt, but was able to make a 3 foot comebacker for bogey.
So he ends up +1, trailing current leader Patrick Cantley by 8 strokes.
He needs to do a lot better tomorrow to make the cut.

Woods withdraws from Riviera Tourney at 2 over par, 11 shots off the lead.
Tiger's 2nd round ended early. After a birdie on the first and a couple of pars, he made a pair of bogeys, including an absolutely dreadful putt from off the green that he left 20 feet or more short, Tiger put his drive on the 6th (?) into the fairway and then was next seen riding in a golf cart back to the clubhouse.
Via radio coms, word was that Tiger's WD was due to illness. That said, Tiger had said in an interview after yesterday's round that he was experiencing back spasms during his round yesterday and he was noticeably limping during the round today and on his way from the golf cart to the clubhouse. So far, no additional details have been shared about the "illness" that caused the WD.
At the time of his WD, Tiger was 11 strokes off the lead and 1 stroke beyond the likely cut line. Since then, the leader has gone to -10, moving the cutline to level par. So, as he's done any number of times since his troubles began in about 2005, Tiger withdrew from another tournament in a position that he'd miss the cut.
This tournment at Riviera is a PGA signature event. That means the points awarded toward the end of the year tournament are double the normal events and the field is limited to just 70 players, far fewer than a typical tournament. So Tiger took up a spot that could have gone to another player only to WD once again.

Thinking more about Tiger's withdrawal tendency, I'd like to see there be at least two categories for statistical purposes:
WD above cut line WD below cut line
I'm not suggesting that Tiger wasn't actually ill yesterday but my guess is he was ill when he started his round, too, and he decided to give it a go anyway. He didn't WD after his opening birdie or after the pars but after two straight bogies that dropped him below the cut line, he called it a day.

Tiger A No Show At The Players, Unlikely To Play It Again
He didn't sign up for last week's event but, as noted in a recent post to this thread, it had been reported back in December that Tiger had shared his hopes to play monthly this year and there had been a lot of speculation that his March event would be The Players. He's not in this week's lackluster Valspar field and with the Masters looming in just 2 weeks, it seems most unlikely he's going to play next week. He's known to want to play the Majors and even though The Players has yet to be named the 5th Major, it's field is by far the best of the year on the PGA tour (LIV players can't participate so there's some dropoff in the quality compared to the majors in which LIV players may tee it up) and that alone would seem to be attractive to Tiger.
No reason for his absence has been provided. If it was only the flu that had caused his WD at Rivera in February, that would not seem to affect his availabilty for last week's tournament. So it seems like there must be something more.
Tiger's decision to skip is not inconsequential for him. I watched virtually all of the last 2 rounds on NBC and there was no mention of it but this article points out that:
I guess there's no way he could ever top his Better Than Most putt on 17, so why try?
Having played only a round plus this year, if he does play the Masters next month, he's unlikely to do very well.
