We'll call this a continuation of a topic with the same title started by fairrebellady at the other place on July 13, 2006 at 11:03:24 am. Over there, the topic attracted 1,377 posts through the forum shutdown on March 27, 2018. The lead post in the original topic read: Obviously, since then, Tiger has battled a lot. Going into today, it had been 1,876 days since he won the 2013 US Open at Pebble Beach, more or less playing an 18 hole playoff on one foot. It was his 79th PGA Tour victory and his 14th major. Until today, I saw no point in restarting it.

Congrats to Tiger Woods for winning his 80th PGA Tour win in the 2018 Tour Championship! The title of the linked piece is not exactly accurate. Tiger was cruising toward a win through the 12th hole today. But Billy Horshell made a run at Tiger and Tiger started to grip. I think it was on the par 3 15th hole that Tiger got a break that may be the difference between winning in regulation and going into a playoff. His tee shot to the island green ended up inches from the water. The grass was tall enough that it wasn't quite like Freddie Couples shot that miraculously stayed dry on a bank at the 1992 Masters, but it dredged up the memory! Tiger ended up making bogey on the hole. He could have made bogey from the drop zone, too, but more likely he'd have taken double. That might have caused enough doubt to enter his head that instead of the up and down on 17, he might have made bogey there, too. No way to know, of course, but there are no asterisks on golf cards or tournament records, so Tiger's win #80 is in the books and the question everyone has been asking -- Will Tiger win again? -- has been answered. I have no doubt that this win will be followed by additional victories. A question that remains is: Will Tiger win another major? The answer to that question will start to play out starting next April in Augusta, GA.

In the meantime, we won't have to wait long to see more of Tiger! He was one of Captain Jim Furyk's picks for the 2018 US Ryder Cup team. That gets underway Friday at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, France.

Watched a little on Saturday and saw he had a 4 stroke lead. Tuned in for a bit yesterday and he seemed in command. Saw that fortunate shot on 15 and thought he was good to go.
The 80th win leaves him just 2 tour wins behind Sam Snead, so he could certainly overtake him in the near future.
He had a lead in the final round of the PGA, so yes I think he may win a major again, especially with Augusta being a good track for him.
Checking World Golf Rankings shows Tiger moved up from 656th at the end of 2017 to 13th now, in just 22 events played in 2018.

Zim, I think you're right that he's probably going to win at least another major, and the Masters is a good bet. He probably has a decent shot at a British Open, too. St. Andrews seemed to set up well for him in 2000 and 2005, and it returns there in 2021. Mentally, he'll have an edge there if his body is still holding up. I don't see him winning a US Open, even at Pebble or even Tory Pines, due to the rough, the length, and his difficulty hitting his driver straight on 30 yard wide fairways. When he was young and he sprayed the ball, he was longer than just about anyone except Daly, and he was so strong that he could dig it out of the US Open's legendary tall and thick rough. That combination made the rough less of a penalty for Tiger than anyone else in the field. And it may have contributed to his back and knee issues. The PGA just seems so random in terms of winners that I see no special advantage for Tiger, unless one of the courses on the schedule (I have not looked) favors him as much as or more than anyone else. That seems unlikely now.

Tiger and Phil squared off in a made for TV match yesterday in Vegas. The match was all square after 18 holes, and it was getting dark quickly. So they put together a makeshift 93 yard hole that was lit up artificially. On the 4th playoff hole, Phil prevailed. I didn't watch -- I would never pay to watch golf on TV -- and apparently there was some technical problem with TV that has Time Warner refunding PPV fees. It sounds like it was pretty bad.

As I noted in the general golf topic, I have not been paying much attention to golf this year. So I missed Tiger's first action of the year. He finished 20th at -10 at Torrey Pines, where he's won an incredible number of times before. So I guess 20th place has to be considered disappointing.

The weather has been awful in So Cal this week for the Genesis Open at Riviera. The second round was not completed until just before 6 pm eastern time yesterday, just about when the 3rd round would normally wrap up if TV had its druthers.
Tiger's play over the first two rounds matched the weather. He walked up to the last sitting at even par, just on the plus side of the projected cut line but he finished fairly early so it could go either way. He made a birdie 3 on the last to get to -1, giving himself a little cushion. The cut line never wavered, so Tiger remains in the field.
They started round 3 a little after 6 pm yesterday (Saturday) and Tiger picked up right where he left off at the end of round two, making 5 straight 3's to open his 3rd round 5 under, vaulting himself to a much more respectable -6 heading into Sunday. He's still 7 shots off the lead but in 14th place now, he might still have a chance if he can keep it up today.
It's going to be a long one. Play in the 3rd round resumes this morning at 6:45 am western time, about an hour and a half from this posting.

Tiger was scheduled to play in this week's tournament at Bay Hill, but apparently withdrew because of a neck boo-boo. Tiger had won Arnie's tourney 8 times. Next up on his schedule is the Players' Championship next weekend at Ponte Verde Beach in Florida. The linked piece says Tiger still plans to play in it. Of course, he'll sit it out if he's at all concerned he might aggravate his condition and then be forced to miss The Masters.

Zinger had a lot to say about Tiger's neck injury that was noted in the previous post. For example: NBC's #1 Golf color commentator also noted that Tiger appeared to be struggling a bit at the Mexico tourney and reported that Rory had observed Tiger getting treatments after each round.
I do disagree strongly with Zinger about one thing he said: Jones, Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods. I don't see the string of names ending there. For a minute it looked like Speith might be the guy, but not so much lately. Whoever it turns out to be -- if he's not already on tour, he's in college or high school -- he'll emerge and the competition to beat Jack's record will be on again.

Tiger announced that his neck boo-boo is all better at a press conference yesterday. So he's playing in the Players' Championship this week. Reading what he said, it sounds like the neck issue is a complication of his back surgery, which apparently involved fusing vertebrae. It hurts my back just to type that. Obviously, it's a cumulative thing and the more he plays, the more it's going to flare up. We'll see what he's got tomorrow when he tees off at 1:27 pm EDT.

Apparently the Golf Digest editors have made Tiger their pick to win the Players this week, citing his iron play as THE factor that makes him compelling at 20 to 1 odds. I think my chances are not much worse putting money on Powerball, but the payoff is a lot better.

Tiger's first round in the Players wasn't great but also wasn't the disaster that it might have been after two weeks on the sideline due to his neck issue. He finished the first round at -2, 5 shots off the lead and in 35th place. If he can match today's score tomorrow or especially improve it by a stroke or two, he should be in decent to good shape for the weekend, as i don't see the leaders shooting -7s again. He likely won't be leading, but he'd be in position for a moving day charge. His record suggests he needs to be leading at the end of the third round to win the tournament.

The 2nd round of The Player is not over for everyone but Tiger is done for the day.
He shot 1 under today, now at -3 overall. He's currently in a tie with a lot of others for 32nd place, 8 strokes off the lead, though the leaders are only on the 10th hole. It looks like about half the field has finished today so while Tiger's score won't change, his position relative to the lead probably will as players improve or worsen their score over their remaining holes.
