Anybody else sad to see the decline of vehicles offered in manual transmission? The only automatic transmission I like is the dual-clutch transmission (DCT) but not offered on many cars yet, which I would buy over a manual transmission. I really don't care for the continuously variable transmission (CVT) at this point offered by some manufactures.

Lots of manual tranies out there. Even these days. Muscle car drivers eat it up. Want to have a major thrill?! Take a peek behind the wheel of the Hennessey C7 twin supercharged Corvette. This IS driving excitement:youtu.be/B-gzNi6MRwI?t=5

Problem is, for a "daily driver", after about 30 years of buying only sticks, I just got tired of it. The traffic around here gets worse every day, and the stick just wasn't fun anymore. But if I get another "play" car, it'll be a stick car. And I agree, those CVTs are just garbage! Would not own a car with that crap for a "transmission".

I used to love driving manual tranny stuff. But, my left knee just won't handle a manual for very long. It hasn't been the same since getting an infection in my knee back in the 80's.

There are still new cars out there with manuals, most of them are either really cheap compacts or they are in sportier cars. You are right though that they are less and less common as demand for them is pretty much disappearing.
I work for a dealership and we have new employees that come in that actually have never in their life driven a stick before, we have to teach them.

I've driven "stick" for 60 years and only recently bought auto. With the heavy (and unpredictable) traffic, stick just doesn't cut it anymore. We used to get better gas mileage with stick, but that advantage is long gone.

Am very lucky living in sparsely populated northern NH. There is no traffic on the two interstates and any of the highways around here. Few cops as well. Have been guilty of playing NASCAR on these blvds. Got rid of my turbocharged 2013 Dodge Dart. It only wanted to give me too much excitement At 30 mph, 3rd gear gets one to 98 mph in 4-5 sec. Three gears remained. Was a fine way to get a major ticket. Never did. A manual actually gives one better gas mileage than an auto. Read of the CVT's. Glad to not have one. My 2017 Fusion Energy has an eCVT that instantly downshifts w/acceptable acceleration. 42 to 97 mpg. A 12 gallon gas tank easily gets way Over 600 miles. Ya have to baby it.

I'm old enough to remember when radio and heater was a option on a new car. My aunt was the only one to have a "stick" when I went for my drivers test.Back then there were two classes of license, And I wanted a "stick". I've been driving trucks for over 50 years and for the last 2 years have had to put up with an automatic and I LOVE IT.

I got a good deal when I bought my 1997 RAV4 because it was a 5 speed stick and the dealer said "nobody wanted it, I had to reduce the price". Alas that car finally rusted out and could not find another stick shift car to replace it. I finally settled for a 2010 Suburu which has an automatic you can "sort of" drive like a stick, but it's not the same.

There is a place for both autos and Manuels. I have a truck that I tow with that has a Manuel and although I love it an auto would work better when I'm actually towing a trailer. Especially in the stop and go traffic that seems to be ever expanding. I have a Manuel 5 speed Subrau and I love it. Gets wonderful gas Milage and has more pep than its automatic cousins. But the thing I treasure most is an old Mopar 4 speed with a Six Pack carb. I would not trade it for anything.

Am an old style drag racer at NHRA sanctioned drag strips since the 1960's. Love the "Christmas Tree" hole shot launching and banging the gears on my 4 speed down the strip. Never grew away from that. Funny cars, dragsters and top fuel elimination races excite me w/their ground shaking and ear rattling effects.
That said, do enjoy my Fusion Energi SE w/its e-trans, 6-Speed auto, and 42-97 mpg. Getting 45 mpg in these mtns. Much more on the flat lands. It has an optional to use lithium battery. The first 21 miles are completely battery powered
New England Dragway 2018 Racing Season begins in 12 days. It's in my blood.

Since the clutch is so heavy in an 18 wheeler I see how you are loving the automatic. What I hate is my choices are slower disappearing, but as I get older, I may not care to drive a manual. Just hate it when only a CVT is offered in some models.

I've been using a CVT equipped sports sedan for 6 years time and 90,000miles. It is the smoothest shifting car I've ever experienced. It is mated to a fairly powerful engine and it accelerates with authority. It is fun to drive fast. Is silent, unobtrusive, and does exactly what a transmission is supposed to do. It has never leaked, burped, whined, or misbehaved in any way. My brother sometime drives with me. He says this is the first car he never gets car sick in. It is so smooth. I got so used to driving a CVT , that when I drive other people's cars or rental cars, it is jarring. They feel so jerky. Especially my sister's Mercedes.
That being said, the problem with these is they can't take high power, heavy loads, tow trailers, and are unforgiving of abuse. You can't 'nurse them along'. When they fail, it is catastrophic. Unlike a conventional auto transmission which you can nurse along for years. ( I did that with several cars with damaged auto transmissions). However, if you don't drive like a cowboy, they will last forever.
