I have had the experience to drive many types of vehicles. My fire department had a 1962 GMC 3000 galon water tanker. It had a 5 speed transmission with a 4 speed differential. You might think that was enough... it also had no syncromesch.
End of story

All my early cars except for my 73' Gran Torino had 3 to 5 speed sticks. I miss my Saab 9-3SE which was a joy to shift though the gears and hit 120 on I-90 outside of Rockford, IL. But those days are gone, forced to have a family CR-V changed all that and of course traffic would make driving a stick impractical.

Toyota has a new wrinkle in CVTs. They have incorporated a 'launch gear'. The CVT has an actual geared connection for getting the car moving from stop. The CVT's belt/pulleys engage later once it's moving. This modification dramatically improves the CVT by addressing two areas. 1st, the belt can be redesigned for much higher loads, able to be used in heavier vehicles or more powerful engines. They do this by changing the belt angle, making the belt/pulley contact angle more vertical. 2nd, the belt does not have to go to the extremes of the pulley - it can stay in the center part where it is more durable. With the direct gear handling the high torque loads at low, the belt and pulleys are relieved of that high stress job. Markedly improving reliability. Expect to see more of this concept in other CVTs.

ronv42:"and of course traffic would make driving a stick impractical. "
How is it impractical? i have driven a manual every day(with few exceptions) for the last 40 years ... in Phoenix traffic. my leg has not fallen off the clutches themselves last a long time (at least 100K miles) There is a little stalling when the season changes and the AC is needed until i get used to taking off with 10HP less because of the compressor (i only start with 55hp to begin with )
So i ask again why is it impractical?

When you get old and you have bad knees or arthritis you'll understand the problem.

I can see if you are in heavy traffic all the time to go with an automatic and have a medical condition. I always say automatics need to be ban when someone hits the accelerator pedal instead of the brake in front of a store and runs in it.

Yes Bill. That is mine. I kinda like old Mopars. When I was younger and that car was new I had Chevelle's. There really wasn't anything around here like that. I picked it up over the years along with another car in my travels. That picture was taken last spring (almost a year ago now) on the road kinda in front of the house. You can see the barn and a farm truck amount other assorted junk in the background. "Kinda"? I think ya like them a lot, man! Cool Mopar!

Weaslespit: Not sure what part of my above post is hard to do . I need to drive between 200 and 1000 miles every week between northern and central Arizona. i do not want to arrive relaxed . I have driven cars like that and the problem there is keeping awake on the 1.7 hour trip (through nothingness) between my home and shop.
As far as driving a mega MPG car, it has it's downsides but it also saves me mega money every month. it also keeps me awake. this month i am driving a 1992 GEO metro conv. it has Manual trans ,manual steering, manual windows and a Radio I can't hear at hwy speed anyway so why bother even having one.
My working life is a lot harder than my driving life and i don't think i would ever want to drive a car that was too easy to use, for very long anyway. If a driver can text and drive there car, it's to easy to use.

I learned how to drive on a Stick Shifter and every chance I have I love to drive a stick again, we are a one vehicle family and the Civic is an automatic, but I am seriously thinking about getting a P/Up and I will definetely get it manual when the time comes.

You don't want to arrive relaxed? That probably puts you in the 1% of people who want to arrive stressed... LOL! If driving an automatic puts you to sleep in an hour and a half, you should seek some medical attention. You could be suffering from sleep apnea.
