I learned to drive a stick in my brother's 1963 Chevy II 300 sedan. It came in handy when, after driving a '78 Monza station wagon with the cheapo THM-200 transmission that needed major repairs before the car was even paid for, I traded it for an '83 Citation 2-door post coupe. Trouble is, I went through three clutches in just over 100K miles (no biggie) and also married a lady who couldn't drive a stick to save her life. If I was the only one driving the car, cool...I'd still be driving a stick. Neither of my daughters can drive a stick, either, and sometimes Daddy has to let them use his car!

Yes Bill. That is mine. I kinda like old Mopars. When I was younger and that car was new I had Chevelle's. There really wasn't anything around here like that. I picked it up over the years along with another car in my travels. That picture was taken last spring (almost a year ago now) on the road kinda in front of the house. You can see the barn and a farm truck amount other assorted junk in the background.

That's great. Let's see now..... 71 Dodge Dart Swinger. With a 340-4 barrel (I hope 😀).
That fills in a lot of blanks on how you nailed the AAR. Wait till I get my crap together and get a better picture of the other car. You will recognize it immediately.

Manual Transmissions are very much alive in my neck of the woods. I am in an area where a lot of people commute the 90 miles into Phoenix every day . Older cars with manuals are the transportation of choice. it's not uncommon for people to just keep replacing engines and transmissions over and over and over. I have seen 25 year old honda, toyota ,and GEO's 400-500-750 thousand miles or even more! Because here in Arizona we have no rust and other than seats, paint and drive train there's not much more to an older car. These peoples worst nightmare is to have to buy a new car, both from a cost and a long term repair cost viewpoint.
In my area we will be replacing clutches for a long time to come.
PS : Automatics are almost unheard of in the commuter group . Automatics don't last long , eat gas( don't tell me they don't i have seen the real world numbers, they eat gas) and cost way,way more to repair.

I have a '48 Chevy truck with the "three-on-the-tree" manual. I have a Hyundai with a dual clutch "automatic" and a Dodge minivan with a full automatic. For everyday driving, I'll take the automatic. The truck is fun to take out from time to time, but if I'm stopped at a light on a hill, people don't realize that these old trucks are manuals and get right up behind me. I haven't rolled back into one yet, but there have been a few close calls.
Someone early on in this thread made a statement that manuals get better mileage. Not really true any more for many vehicles. Autos are that good now.

Yeah, when you have 6 or even 10 gears, which are quite common theses days, those newer automatics help gas mileage a lot.

First of all i am not talking about the latest and greatest of anything . these commuter cars are at least 10 years old and some 30+ When you put 25,000 miles a year on a car you would have to be nuts to buy and drive a new one, it would bankrupt it's owner. with good running 4cil 5 speed low mile sub compacts all over the place for peanuts why would anyone buy anything else?
My point was manual transmissions are not going away , these will live on for a lots of years to come and a lot of them will be rebuilt and made to go on even further . it does not matter what the auto makers put out there(right now), modern cars are too expensive anyway and don't last long. these 6-7-10 speed transmissions are going to fall apart and be way to expensive to repair,
I am already seeing a backlash from these expensive complex cars a lot of people want simpler high MPG cars and right now nobody's really making them. you wait and see what sells when the credit card induced high falls apart, it's not going to be fully loaded pickup trucks for 70K, i am sure of that .
The 5 speed is not dead .......just sleeping.

I rented a couple of cars recently because my daily drive ('99 Sube) has 275K miles on it and we were driving far. It was cheaper to rent a car for these trips than replace the old ridge runner or risk a breakdown. Anyhow..... The first was a Chrysler 200. It had a 9 speed auto in it. Got close to 50 mpg. The other wax an Hyandi Elantra. 6 speed auto. Got 44 mpg with it. Not bad. Can't complain. Put over 1,500 miles on each one. It freaked me out when I figured out the Chrysler had 9 gears /speeds.
