Am so fond of homegrown tomatoes they are never bought at the store Durn things are white/green and are gassed to look ripe. Using colored bell peppers to take their place. In my area tomato harvest is 2 or 3 months. For me, worth the wait, for that heavenly taste.

Midnight sun, I totally agree with you. I drink my home canned juice and eat my own canned tomatoes. I will not buy or eat the cardboard tomatoes from any store. I usually get my first ripe Early Girl by July 4th. At least that's my goal!

Wish far northern NH in the mtns had tomatoes in July Maybe it's time for a small greenhouse To jump start the growing season. Been looking at 8' mini ones, 3' tallcost is under $28. Free shpg too. Should have bought y/a.

Up here in the frozen tundra we have bushel boy They're hydroponic tomatoes and picked ripe. Not as good as homegrown but still better than the cardboard tomatoes of years ago.

Should have bought y/a. My next door neighbors grew up here in the Twin Cities but then spent several years in Seattle before moving back a couple years ago. They established a veggie garden and I was amazed at their homemade greenhouse which she said everyone uses out there. It is just a frame built of 3/4" pvc pipe and covered with thin plastic sheeting. Easy peasy. I think theirs measures about 4' by 6' or so and about 4' tall.

That would be a very inexpensive way to go. I know my dad used to start some seeds in a cold frame. It worked very well. I can only recall my parents buying impatiens and geranium plants, never veggies.

Last summer one of my tomato plants was this heirloom called Paul Robeson. It was wonderful! Sweet and juicy with deep tomato flavor. I hope I can find it again this year. I bought my starter plants at the Wedge Co-op. They were two for the price of one when I went. I also got an Early Early Girl and some cherry tomatoes. The Early Early Girls weren't wonderful but ok. The cherries were good.

rjgimp, Is your neighbors greenhouse about the same size?
One thing I know about plastic is that if you use it all season long, you will probably have to replace it yearly. The sun and the heat really do a number on it and make it brittle. I know that commercial greenhouses (hoop houses) have their roofs replaced every couple of years and that plastic, while clear, has uv inhibitors in it.

Hello everyone!
I am enjoying reading all of your posts! I used to plant flowers and a few tomato plants. I haven't done that for quite a while now. I do enjoying growing flowers on my porch in the summer.
Hope you all have a blessed Sunday!

I plant a very small garden now. My Son keeps me supplied with all I can eat and want to can. Still when Spring is here, I have this strong overwhelming need to plant a garden, a big garden. Am I weird or does everyone get the itch to plant? I love all the seed catalogs!

I had my hands in the soil yesterday clearing the garden for this coming spring. I'm in the process of dismantling a flower bed & shifting the vegetable garden over slightly for more sunlight since an oak tree has grown fuller over the years and is blocking the sun part of the day.
