Mtn Day was celebrated with a walk to the happy brook ½ mi across the road into the woods and down a farm tractor made road well growing w/trees. 120 y/a there were many hayfields for cows to graze. One farmer created a road from the then pasture to the brook so his cows could walk to get water. There used to be a huge maple tree that had fallen perfectly across the brook. Was a fun walk across it onto the other side. The other side continued w/ 120 y/a trees in a marvelous forest w/ the soil wonderfully flat, with ferns and green moss on the floor. Enjoyed hiking for miles in that fabulous area for 29 years. About 5 winters ago that entire area was logged. The area was cut selectively, Not clear cut, less than 3" wide pulpwood was left scattered so deep it was impossible to walk w/o slipping. Trees branches, limbs, and etc will become fertilizer to make the next growth healthy. In winter it is so excellent to snowshoe on and catch sight of all the wild animals. Now to return to the area this winter and photograph animals using my new 300-600 mm lens. Re-read my last post. My mistake, my hikes are 21.25 miles each week and total 3,250 ft rise in elevation. Am building up my stamina in order to return to the Four Thousand Footers. Below are the MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes used in my elevation gain. Tub framed shoes have no traction on slopes. These have built in crampons and saw tooth edges w/a telivator for the heals of one's boots that keeps one feet level on dangerously steep terrain. They cost $300 and work Tremendously. Also own Grivel step in 12 point mtn crampons, in case the winter hike gets to ice and the going becomes vertical. Used to lead groups of hikers. Have all the whistles and bells needed for four season backpacking or long distance hiking. No longer have my fearless youth. More people should get out be one w/nature, walk, hike, learn and be healthy. Back in a couple of days. Happy Trails!

Hi, MidnightSun - Sounds like you're on a quest. I've never seen a 300-600mm lens, but it sure sounds like some serious glass. My go-to lens is a 16-85mm. I'm really a novice photographer, but I sure enjoy the YouTube videos by Thomas Heaton. Hope you're having a great week.

Midnightsun, elevation hikes are quite impressive. Wife and I went to Smoky mountains and went to Clingmans cove and from parking lot to top observation deck is a little over a mile and paved. We had to stop several times up to catch our breath. I usually waited for wife to give, but gladly took the break. We didn't stop going down though....
I've determined will go with posting yesterdays walks since I've been doing at least 2 a days (sometimes 3).
8.92 miles 20,264 steps - 72 F / 94% R/H (it was not raining) fortunately most of that was cloudy.

Reb - That's a lot of walking. Our weather seems similar. Are you in the Great Lakes Region? I only see rain on 4 of the next 10 days, and some lows in the low 50s. Things are looking up!

Love the miles you both hike. In my 20's rented a car for $29.95 w/unlimited miles and took 3 friends to Skyline Drive, Virginia. This is a 105-mile road that runs the entire length of the National Park Service's Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, generally along the ridge of the mountains. 101 of those miles is the Appalachian Trail (2190 mi from GE to ME) lie in beautiful Shenandoah National Park and parallel to Skyline Drive. We hiked mtns on the A/T for the full day we were there. Wish I could remember the names. Yet somewhat remembering the exquisite views is good enough for me. Mt Mitchell is the highest Mtn east of the rockies. 6684' in elevation Clingman's Dome is the 2nd at 6643' in elevation. Looked at pix on the web to find these of the Dome: P.S. They are not attachments using GBO data. They are hosted by and use storage on their original sites.

Yea, it's a view. By the way, the path is only 1/2 mile from the parking lot... It was a hike going up.

Good Morning, reb and MidnightSun - That view of the Blue Ridge Mts from the observation deck is really magnificent. I travel through West Virginia twice a year and am always in awe of the scenery. Planned to take today off, but it's a rare (at least for this year) day with no rain in the forecast, so I couldn't waste it. Tomorrow it's back to the slop. Enjoy!
