The City of Baytown (far east suburban Houston) had an officer-involved shooting late Monday night. A woman, with a history of paranoid schizophrenia, was being arrested for outstanding warrants. She was resisting arrest, and the officer used his Taser. She grabbed the Taser and tased the cop. The next thing the cop did was to shoot the woman. She died.
The shooting is being investigated by the City of Baytown, the Harris County District Attorney, and the Texas Rangers (so far).
Tuesday night, FOX 26 had a panel discussion of whether the shooting was justified or not. There was a wide divergence of opinions.

From what I heard, the woman claimed to be pregnant but was not. Also, the officer knew of this woman and her mental health history. Have a nephew with schizophrenia who had a run in with a police officer. But since the DA in that county never prosecuted anyone, he was let off. Father is BIL who really had no knowledge of the effects of mental health and did not make him go to therapy.

My girlfriend's step sister and her partner have been suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome since the election which has cost them jobs, housing, family support systems and more.
The election exposed how many truly crazy, intolerant and unstable people are out there...
Speaking of the 2016 election, a lot of people who self-identify as Democrats say they're having emotional distress.
Interestingly enough, the use of mental health services hasn't increased significantly.

My Mom tried to convince me that I was misdiagnosed, but she went on stereotypes of mental illness and said that I didn't. I ended out pulling out a copy of DSM-IV (they didn't have DSM-V, the current version, yet) and I went through it line by line and stating four characteristics of bipolar affective disorder that I did have. They listed seven, all you have to have is four for a positive diagnosis. Except, now, I think that I had five of them. I did have an mdoc that suspected it in 1992, but it took to 1998 to come up with the definitive diagnosis. I also had sleep apnea, and the experts have since found other patients where when they treated them for sleep apnea it uncovered masked mental illnesses. They knew that I had both anxiety and depression at the time.

Glad you got the correct diagnosis. But as a HS teacher, I had many students misdiagnosed and as a result did not do as well as they could. Other parents were in denial and these students caused problems. Sadly the Rio Grande Valley is not known for its treatment of mental illness. Nephew was a vet and went to the VA where often everything was treated with meds. Even in the private sector the news is not good. A church member was transferred here with a special needs son and after one year he asked to be moved back to San Antonio where his doctor was much better than any of those here.

I wonder how much substance abuse is misguided self-medication. Particularly with what I call the worst medication of all (alcohol). The one that you can get at nearly any grocery store or convenience store without a prescription.
As part of my talk therapy, I read a couple of books. One of them said if you go into a psych ward, bring cigarettes if you smoke (although it's been a number of years, psych wards may be smoke-free now). They said if you don't smoke you probably should bring a gas mask because everyone else in there smokes. I don't smoke (or drink alcohol), and I decided that I'd get off of the ward during smoke breaks. I did, but I made a point of standing at the most upwind point. From which point the other patients offered me a smoke. I told them I just didn't want to be in the ward 24x7.
Some clinicians say that dual diagnosis (co-existing substance abuse and mental illness) patients should spend a year sober before the doctor definitively decides they are mentally ill.

Didn't sleep Sunday night and Monday morning. Seems to be one of the residual characteristics of bipolar affective disorder that rears its ugly head on me. My housemate (I own the house, he does all the stuff involved with owning a house that I basically can't do) commented "Either stress, or you were feeling really bad." I said, "Probably stress." Seems to happen when I get in the part of the month when bills come in rapid-fire. Last bill for the month came in today.
Going to the internist tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon. He's dual certified in internal medicine and sleep medicine. Planning to ask him if he can recommend a psychiatrist. Want one that's in-network. Would not be adverse to letting him prescribe my neuroscience meds too. Not too happy with my current pdoc, every time another pdoc looks at me they want to change my meds. I've had one even say that my meds conflict with each other. Definitely at least on paper.

Went to internist this afternoon. Blood pressure higher than he would like. They took it three times, each time it was higher than it was the time before. Asked him about a psychiatrist. Seems that primary care doctors and psychiatrists don't mingle that much. As to my blood pressure, he changed me to a different med that I've had good luck with in the past. Some meds just as well be candy given the effect they have on me.

Had a case where somebody just snapped in one of the small towns northeast of Houston (Cleveland, TX). They had a 65-year-old man who had been evicted from another's property. The man who owned the property also owned a plumbing service. The evicted man went in and shot three people at the plumbing service (shot and killed the female secretary, wounded the owner, wounded the owner's brother). The shooter escaped from the scene in the secretary's vehicle. They had a deputy who tracked down the shooter and he got shot also. They had an extensive manhunt for the shooter that went on a number of hours. They found him hiding under a boat. When the authorities tried to get him to come out, he committed suicide.

Saw that story awhile back. Of course another disgruntled employee shot up his office and killed 12 people in Virginia. Will wait and see what mental health issues appeared before hand/

In Colorado, they had a vigil last night from the most recent school shooting. They had a politician talking about gun control. He was shouted down by students chanting "Mental Health!"
Reasonable common sense gun regulation along with laws to combat the mental health issue is what is needed. That from a former libertarian. We've already got over 20,000 gun laws. Doing more of what we already know doesn't work is insanity. The students are right.
