Seems when I go to the ER they do a short mental status check. Don't know if that's because of my known medical history or they do it to everyone. Concerned but no incongruent affect. I did have one of my primary doctors (not the one that I go to now) say, "You take a lot of Geodon." To which my pdoc said, "You could be taking more." Which I started in 2017 when another pdoc looked at me and stopped a med that was giving me a rash when I took it.

Seems that our President now admits to a mental health issues and wants more institutions. I agree with him on that issue which is something I said in many of the years that I was teaching school. However, the Special Ed community disagreed with me and the administration both told me to not speak out on the issue. Let's see what happens. The politicians said back when the US started closing the institutions in a big way that there would be community-based assertive treatment programs. Assertive treatment programs are rarer than hen's teeth. Results in the jail system being the largest provider of mental health services in Harris County. Texas is towards the bottom of the list when it comes to dealing with mental health. If it were not for the ADA most schools in Texas would not have any serious special ed programs. Had a BIL with autism but in south Texas there is no program for adults with autism. But Texas would rather fund lawsuits for all the bills they pass knowing full well they will be challenged in court.

Couple of interesting stories out of Texas.
The mass shooter Labor Day Weekend in the Midland-Odessa area had his mental status deteriorating for a while. In fact, in 2014, he was rejected for a firearms purchase. That said, he got his gun through a private sale where there is no background check required.
In Houston, a Popeye's fast food place ran out of chicken sandwiches. Some idiot decides to wave a gun around. No shots were fired, fortunately.

How do you enforce background checks in a black market? The very idea is ludicrous. Hey! Maybe we should require background checks for sales of heroin and other illegal drugs. That'll shut them down!

Odessa shooter's sale is being looked at. Seems authorities have somehow found the seller, or seem pretty sure. If so, there may be some kind of legal consequences. Also, part of any law that bans those who mental issues from possesing a gun will depend on people reporting much like we have with child abuse.

Several years ago two neighbors did not get along (long sad story) and were always calling the police on each other. Child abuse, illegal guns, gang activity, noise, etc. But the law now requires if you see chiold abuse and you do not report it, you can be prosecuted. Had a family member that happened to because she says she would never throw another family member "under the bus." This is the society we live in.

But the police cannot take away guns just because of a neighbor's complaint. Most "red flag" laws will require some form of due process.

And are there consequences for false reporting? Normally, yes. Cannot make a false police report, but like all laws, some people with good lawyers get away with crimes.

Been talking to my medical insurance about an in-network pdoc. I called them yesterday and talked to somebody in Illinois. Today, I got a phone call from somebody here in Texas. Going to have to make sure they also do Medicare because I'll be 65 in seven months.

There seems to be about a one-month wait to get into a pdoc for a new patient appointment. I've still got my out of network pdoc in case there's an exacerbation. One of the providers I talked to said I'd be taken off of the meds I'm currently on.
