Wonderful Geezer. I haven't heard you talk of golf much lately. Glad you are able to get out there and play. See any turkeys? We have turkeys taking over a few towns here.
Thinking negative thoughts just sends one down a rocky road. says Sandipaws. I sure experienced that recently. I let it get to me and went into a depression and l have only felt that way once before. When Mom died and of course that was much worse. But l pulled out of this slump in a few days when l worked at it.
Life is good as a fellow in Fort Bragg said to me "IF you consider the alternative" LOL l prefer not to do that. MY health is good and l am fortunate there. That is the basis of being happy.

The four year old grandson had his first soccer game today. I have to preface this account by saying the kid is smart (been reading since he was two), bright and bubbly BUT he is NOT going to be a soccer star. He's been at practice for a few sessions but has absolutely no interest in the game. Today was a hilarious example. When the game started he sat down on the field and played with the grass. This isn't uncommon with first timers. One kid was laying down behind the goal. The coach got him to stand up, then placed the ball at the center of the field. The four year old, Xavi, went over to the ball and sat on it. I'm in tears laughing.
Next, after some coaching, the ball is kicked. Not by Xavi's team. Not one of those kids (there were five on each team) showed interest. The other team had a few kids with skills and proceeded to score the next zillion or so goals. Xavi cheered for every one of them.
Finally, he got the idea and broke down the field at a pace slower than an inch worm. No one was all that interested in stopping him, so the seas parted and eventually he made his way toward the goal. The wrong goal, but that didn't seem to matter. He got down to the goal, made a feeble attempt at kicking it in, but the ball went sideways of his foot and stopped about a foot off to the right. Not to worry, folks. He casually walked over to the ball, picked it up and placed it in front of the goal and...one of the other kids on his team woke up suddenly and kicked the ball off to the side again. Xavi went over to the ball and sat on it.
This was 45 minutes of laughter this morning. What a great way to start a Saturday. He has another game tomorrow...

Absolutely a wonderful description of grandson's soccer experience. Laughed til tears came into eyes. Loved it and the whole game was a complete laugh a thon. Too bad you didn't film it for entering in funny tv show to win big bucks. I do think it would have got the prize. Thank you Geezer for sharing. We all need that natural laugh with. Bless his heart out there with absolutely no idea of the game.

Life is good for me as a senior especially. I am so grateful and wish this had been so when my Mom was a senior. So many helpful programs available to help us seniors.

Youth soccer again this morning. Despite being well into the season, there hasn't been any significant improvement on the field. Grandson is totally uninterested. He spends almost the entire time sitting at midfield, although today the coach got him up and semi-involved at one point. He kicked the ball once. It went about 18 inches, then a kid from the other team kicked it away and scored a goal. Xavi's reaction was to stand there and say "Hey, I was using that!"
Of course there are other layers on the team to take up the slack. The coach's son is the one who lays down behind the goal and refuses to play. Then this other kid showed up in Batman sunglasses, complete with bat wings. They covered most of his face and he probably couldn't see very well because he'd run a few feet, do a faceplant, get up, put them back on, repeat. Repeat. Repeat... At some point he discovered that looking upward worked a lot better, so he spent the rest of the game standing on the field looking at treetops and clouds.
Dominic, the one kid who actually tries from time to time, wasn't much interested in the game today. He and Xavi sat at midfield for a considerable amount of the game ripping up grass and placing it on each other's heads. Well, that was when the two of them weren't looking for leaves and sticks, which were carried to the sidelines for parents to hold onto until after the game. I guess they eventually ran out of interesting flora and making grass toupees for each other because I heard Xavi say to Dominic "Hey, let's look for butterflies!"
There's a little girl on the team as well. She's probably the best player on the team - if you stretch the meaning of "best." Her concentration seemed to be on twisting the back of her shorts tighter and tighter until she gave herself some form of twisty wedgie. I'd never seen that before, so I'll have to try it on myself while I watch the Yankees game later today. Hey, you never know...
Toward the end, both team coaches concentrated on getting Xavi to kick the ball, so they lined him on the midfield line, put a ball in front of him and told him to kick it in the goal. Fortunately, the field is only about forty feet long because we'd still be there if it was a standard field. He kicked it about a foot each kick. Finally, he was in front of the goal, and with one final mighty blast, booted that ball to within a half inch of the goal line. Then he sat down and dug in the grass for a new treasure.

What l want to know is "why are the parents insisting on those babies to even be on the field?" it is quite obvious they have no interest in or even understand soccer.

The parents are there, laughing along with me. The coach quit yesterday because his son didn't want to play any more. Xavi's dad is trying to get Xavi more involved with other kids, plus get some exercise. I think he's on a fool's errand.
I went through something similar with my son. His mother signed him up for little league. He wasn't interested and hated it, so when it was my turn to take him, we'd play hooky. Eventually his mother saw the light and pulled him out. Now that he's 41 maybe I'll sign him up for little league and see how it goes this time...

Yes BG Geezer is always good for a laugh and looks like gson is taking after him.
What's wrong with just going to kiddie park for exercise? I think Dad is the soccer interested one or at least competitive. 4 is a bit young IMO. for sports games beyond maybe tossing a ball.
My baby son was just the same as Xavi, no interest in sports activities. I entered him in little league. Lasted maybe a game or two. He was more into mind games. Indoor stuff.

Hello every one. Don't want to repeat everything l post in Life is Sweet, but do want to check in here once in awhile. Busy and son's birthday friday so went to a place for tourists really, and we had a good time, expensive but good quality. Way too crowded for our tastes. People confused and looking at cells just standing around in the blocked aisles but most were pleasant when l tried getting thru with my walker, and it was all good. The food we had was different and excellent, but one pizza and one salad with 2 cokes and tip was $45. It was his birthday so l didn't mind. Then we went on to buy chocolates and later cup cakes. One small cupcake $3.50, but admit it was delicious. All in all an enjoyable experience which will probably not be revisited.
I rested the next day and organized frozen foods a bit. Missed the Aloha show at Fairgrounds again.

Hey there BG glad you enjoyed 2 nice trips. Everyone around me is traveling right now. Friend in Canada just back from Italy and my neighbor just arriving home today from further north where she went to house and pet sit for daughter who travelled to Georgia. I think l have pretty much done all the traveling l want to do. I am even getting the idea that l might not even make another move. (I usually move every 4 years since retirement) Too tiring at my age now and l think l have found the best place for me here in Napa , all is close that l need except son.

I'm back from our golf league's annual year end outing in Binghamton NY (Gateway to anywhere but Binghamton). It was great and I played better than I'd played all season.
Now, another installment of the four year old's soccer career. Sadly, he still hasn't shown any interest in actually playing, but he doesn't mind going out on the field and having all the action going on around him while he finds leaves and insects to stuff in his pockets. Today, however, there was a new twist. Well, not a twist. A roll. Lining himself on the end line, he rolled all the way (maybe 30') to midfield while the game progressed. One of the players on his team yelled for him to get out of the way, but he ignored her and continued on his journey. When he got to midfield he sat up....and stayed there for the rest of the half. Oh, well.
The team gained a new player - and this one, a little girl, actually showed interest in kicking the ball. No interest in kicking it toward the goal, but just kicking it in whatever direction she happened to be facing when the ball came her way. She's now the star of the team. I can't wait for the next game.
