Went to blood bank today. Mentioned I had the baby tooth extracted on the 2nd of the month. They asked me a number of questions (no antibiotics, no blood transfusion) and cleared me to donate. They first put down that I had it done today and they thought I would need to be deferred. Twelve days ago, no problem!

National Hepatitis Testing Day.
Observed annually on May 19th This year, on a day of the week where most medical facilities are closed. Although, for some reason, Baby Boomers are more likely to have undiagnosed hepatitis than the older and younger generations.
While it's not recommended as a screening technique (the old bugaboo of false negatives), donating blood products gets you screened for fourteen types of microbial nasties. Although I wonder, having donated more than 200 times in the past ten years, whether they've decided to skip testing my platelets. The blood bank here says that they are allowed to choose doing that. I know they still collect the half-dozen Vacutainer Plus (the "plus" is because they're plastic instead of glass, so you can drop them and not send blood everywhere) tubes 24 times a year (unless they did like they did in February and took me for red cells, which gets you an eight-week break).

Felt this morning like I could have used a doctor. Woke up from a sound sleep about two o'clock in the morning. Didn't feel well when I woke up: I was sweating, nauseated, and everything was spinning around. My housemate had some of the same or worse. Went back to sleep about eight o'clock and woke up close to noon cold, without nausea, and the walls were holding steady. Been that way all afternoon.
Wondered if it would run into the weekend. I can always go to a doc in the box, they'd probably be as good as my regular mdoc for something like that. Don't want to go to an ER because my medical insurance has a 40% copay unless you're either injured or sick enough to admit.

Made an appointment with my primary care doctor early this afternoon for tomorrow afternoon. My blood pressure is elevated. It was 122/70 on April 22nd and 140/87 on May 14th. I also want to ask him if he can recommend a psychiatrist. The one I went to last time is now out-of-network. I wouldn't be that opposed to having my primary care doctor prescribe my meds if he feels OK about it. I would think a sleep doctor gets to know a good bit of psychiatry on the side. University of Texas Medical Branch faculty also has a group practice. Most of the comments I've read about it were positive. One patient didn't think much of the first pdoc he had, but he was happy with the second one.

Morning appointment over. My housemate AJ asked me what was on my agenda for today. When I said pdoc and blood bank, he said the pdoc wouldn’t say I was too crazy to donate. Basically, if you're sane enough to understand the donor history questions, you're OK to donate. None of the meds that a pdoc usually prescribes will result in a deferral. I was kind of surprised that included clozapine and valproates (never taken clozapine, took Depakote between 1998 and 2017). When I resumed donating after a long vacation from donating (a combination of never being asked and assuming I'd be deferred because of meds that I take), I listed everything that was wrong with me at the time and they said I could donate. That was ten years ago, got more wrong with me now. But neither an arthritic knee or a left branch bundle block will keep you away from the blood bank. My internist says about the left branch bundle block if it's asymptomatic it's just an oddity in my EKG.
