The snow depth is about 9 inches according to the weather people, and the birds are constantly coming and going. I am feeding sunflower hearts mixed with cracked corn and millet. It is time to visit the seed store and get more before our weather turns much colder later in the week. Instead of highs in the 20's, we will be looking at a stretch of high temps only in the lower single digits with some lows in the minus singles and even maybe colder by this time next week. I'll be putting out more suet too.

The birds gobble up anything I put out there. I just had to buy another bag of sunflower chips. I will be buying more suet today at the Ace Hardware since it is priced at 99ยข this month.
Other than yesterday, we have had temperatures running about 10 degrees above normal, and the last snowstorm missed us. We are slowly losing some of our snow depth, so I am having hopes for an early spring.

Our snow cover is getting thin, but with the big storm set to come through in the next few days, I will be filling all the feeders since there will be lots of traffic soon.

Our snow cover is gone. Just snow piles remain from plowing. The first robin showed for me yesterday in a neighbor's tree. But, now the dark-eyed juncos are really gathering around near the feeders. I had about 15 of them in one small area at once, leading me to believe that they have travel plans.

The juncos are still here today, but their leave date is getting closer.
The male goldfinches are starting to turn yellow now.

But, I just saw 2 juncos under the feeder a few minutes ago. They might just be passing through.

There are 4 juncos in the yard feeding away right now. So, not officially gone yet.

I saw 2 juncos yesterday morning, and with the cold and snow in the area this morning, I'll guess they didn't leave.

I had 1 dark-eyed junco on the ground feeding this morning. This chilly weather must be slowing the migration north. Now I have grackles and some red winged blackbirds visiting. And the starlings too. So many that I pulled the feeder and will keep it down for a few days in hopes that they move on.

I put the feeder back into place. The grackles haven't been back yet, but I still have at least one dark-eyed junco around. The male goldfinches are fully into their summer plumage of bright yellow now.

It looks like the juncos may have finally left. Now, if it warms up, the hummingbirds may appear in the next week or so.

The first hummingbird appeared at my feeder yesterday just past noon. I will also be looking for my first oriole and rose-breasted grosbeak too. Reports are that they are here.

None of the other birds listed in my last post have appeared yet, but an indigo bunting was on a limb above my feeders yesterday.

I just had 3 orioles on the feeder getting after the grape jelly. 1 male and 2 females.
