Right about 10 AM this morning, I had 2 dark-eyed juncos on the ground under the feeder in the front yard. So, they are starting to arrive for the winter season.

The male goldfinches are certainly into their winter color now. The yellow has turned a green-gray tint. The dark-eyed juncos have a much larger presence now too.
I put up a new feeder in back to replace the old one that has been weathered and had a broken plastic panel. And purchased more sunflower hearts and chips. I hate cleaning up shells.

I bought a piece of suet that has Hot Pepper in it and put that in the suet cage. It is keeping the squirrels away so far.

That same piece of suet is still in my suet cage. It has been picked at and maybe chewed on a bit, but it is still there after 12 days. The squirrels used to take a new one to nothing in a little over a day.

A slight layer of snow encouraged the dark-eyed juncos to visit. Yes they know the spillage from the feeder is there; just have to get it before the squirrels do. This afternoon, the snow melted away, so the juncos will find other food again now.
Some of that Hot Pepper suet is still in that cage, and a white-breasted nuthatch was picking at it. So the pepper doesn't seem to bother the birds, just like the advertising said.

I still have about 1/4 piece of that Hot Pepper suet in the cage. The squirrels are leaving it alone.
Bird traffic in general is a bit less since there is still bare ground.

That Hot Pepper suet piece is getting smaller, but still there. I will need to buy a new one soon though.
The ground is still bare, so the amount of birds at the feeder is less. The crows and starlings have been staying away, and that is good.

The old suet cake had finally been eaten by the White-Breasted Nuthatches, and the Red-Bellied Woodpecker that visit from time to time. I bought a new Hot Pepper suet cake and put it into the feeder just before sundown yesterday.
We received about a half inch of snow overnight to cover the bare ground. That might bring a bit more activity to the feeder too.

The dusting of snow melted yesterday, so the birds and squirrels are finding food easily again. The White-Breasted Nuthatches and Downy Woodpeckers have started enjoying the new suet.

Now that we have a couple inches of snow here, the birds are showing at the feeders more. I cleaned a couple of spots under the feeders and put down seed for the ground feeding birds like the Juncos.

Snow is gone, but I have had Starlings showing up at the feeders. I will let the feeders stay empty for a few days. They will move on.

I will fill the feeders again now that things have quieted down. Colder with rain/snow on the way.

I saw my first Robin of the year today. I'll put out some meal worms tomorrow since they are not a bird that uses a feeder.

More Robins have arrived since my last post. We had snow yesterday which made it necessary to put out some meal worms. Today, we have had rain which has melted our snow away. It is raining again this evening, but we are supposed to change to snow in the AM. The Dark-Eyed Juncos are feeding eagerly under the feeders, going after the seeds that the other birds knock to the ground. An occasional Downy Woodpecker shows for the suet.
I have also noticed that the male Goldfinches are starting to show a hint of yellow in their chests now.

After leaving the feeders empty again to discourage the Starlings, I refilled everything yesterday afternoon. The male Goldfinches are definitely gold now.
