I am relatively new to GBO and stumbled on your thread today. I agree that there must be people gaming the system, but in the big scheme of things, what does it really matter? That is the way life works, especially in games, with the operative word being “games.”
The primary purpose of Gas Buddy is to help people find the lowest gas prices. The points they give us for reporting prices are just incentives for people to post them. What difference in the scheme of things does it make if someone is getting a few extra points? Yes, you can say they may get a few more entries to win free gas, but who cares? I would be more concerned about people that report prices from home without ever seeing the prices themselves. We know that happens all the time, yet Gas Buddy does nothing about it.
Your posts represent a lot of time and effort being put into something that, in the overall game of life, does no apparent harm. Just think of all the other productive things you could be doing with that time. The posts also appear to be full of emotion, indicating they might be causing distress. Take it from someone who has been around the sun more times than I would like to admit, it isn’t worth it.
If you are really concerned about protecting your points rank, why not figure out how they are doing it? Obviously, GB has some flaws in their application that people have discovered and are exploiting. Presumably, you’ve already tried to get GB’s attention about this and they’ve ignored your inquiries the same way they ignore all of us about most everything. Make it a game to outsmart the system, or maybe offer a peace pipe to the GBs that are better at the game and see if they will mentor you in their ways instead of burning bridges. That is how everyone gets ahead in life.
Good luck.

Most Canadian GB's got an extra 1,000 points today and earned 3,025 points - Was it Tim Horton's Birthday??? CGB#1 & CGB#2 both were able to score an extra 1,000 points today and obtained 4,025. Of all 13 Canadian GB's in the top 100 of the All-Time Leaderboard, CGB#1 & CGB#2 were the ONLY ones to get an extra 1,000 points today.

Once again, another challenge with bonus points...and certain Canadian GB's are able to double-triple dip in extra points. Happened last week and is happening again today... Just click on any of the top 15 Canadian Gas Buddies on the All-Time Leaderboard and you'll notice that one of these things ain't like the other for a few of them - including regular visitors to this site.

Maybe you missed my earlier post in this thread, but my question is does it really matter? This is just a game and the points for the most part are meaningless. Yes, we can win a gas card, but so what? I have a few friends in Canada and reached out to them. Here is one possible explanation for last week and the other times. There were challenges in Canada through McDonalds last week, much like we have here. Due to language laws in Canada, most challenges require a French and English version, so they can be had twice by Canadians that are near or travel to the French speaking Quebec Province. If they live or find themselves anywhere near the US border, or cross into the US, they can pick up US cell towers and grab our challenges as well. I know that I have been outside of my home town and have picked up occasional challenges that were either local or regional and not in my hometown. Houston had a Rally's challenge last year that I picked up while there on business and Des Moines had a Kum and Go challenge I snagged. Gas Buddy will put challenges anywhere locally, regionally, or nationally if someone is crazy enough to pay them so I imagine that happens now and then in Canada as well. GB will put up a points challenge for anyone who pays them enough. Yes, it can be frustrating if you are competitive and want to move up in the points standings, but as I learned a long time ago, this is just a game that whether I win or lose, it has no impact on my life. As my dad taught me years ago, only focus on the things you can control. GB points are something I have no control over so I do not worry about it. I just get the points I can and do not worry about what everyone else gets. Stressing over things we do not have control over adversely hurts our health and can cause things like ulcers, heart attacks, or other serious medical/mental issues. Hope my dad's wisdom helps you live a happier life.

bullworth, sorry...not ignoring you and you make some great points about points (no pun intended). I have not yet had the time to put together a response to your points. Thanks for the info on the language thing - I never heard that before and no other Canadian has brought it up here, nor have I read it on these boards or on the ole' Gas Buddy boards (might explain how some American GB's have been able to play along with their Canadian buddies in earning some of those "extra" points).

CGB#1 - I see you finally earned your extra 100 points today - it's been 12 weeks that you seem to have forgotten about them! I was actually recently thinking about writing about it here as to alert you that you were missing out - maybe you were just overlooking it...then again, I also thought, maybe you didn't care for a measly 100 weekly points - too much trouble for ya - you'd make up plenty of extra points using your various tricks up your sleeve that far exceeds a simple 100 points. Or, as one your fellow Canadian GB's wrote about a few weeks back, maybe you were you in 100 point bonus Gas Buddy jail and not allowed to earn those extra 100 weekly points?? I know you won't respond but I also know you log in often enough and will see this...

Xtra Points again today for some.
...especially noteworthy was CGB#2, who pulled down 5,025 points today. Must have been that US/Canadian Border hack/whack again.

CGB#3 (Vancouver area) got his extra points today - he totaled out today at 5,025 points, just like CGB#2 (Toronto area) was able to do yesterday.
CGB#1 only pulled in an extra 2k points yesterday! He usually waits until later in the week to add in his weekly 1k bonus points.
A few others also were able to get the 2k point bonus yesterday, whereas 90% of the top 50 did not.

I'm reached out to, both here and GB, by those who are dismayed that GB allows users to manipulate things that 99.9% of GB users don't/won't/can't. So, yes, it really does matter to me and others. Your dad was a very wise man indeed and I really do live by some of that same wisdom. As to my health and worrying about things I can't control - I'm good - Healthy, young (compared to those here and the original GB's) and I really don't stress over GB points - I just point em' out. Enjoy the ride! I know I am!

Interesting...CGB#3 is limited to 1,400 points a day now? Is he back in GasBuddy Points jail "again"??

Something is strange with the GasBuddy points coming out of Canada today...from the "usual suspects". It's like watching election returns from California, Nevada, Arizona, and Pennsylvania all at once...

Was there 1,000 Extra points for Canada today??
Saw some earning an extra 1,000 points today, after already earning their weekly 1,000 point bonus yesterday.
